DIMO is an open protocol for vehicle identity, access and verification. Each vehicle registered on DIMO gets an on-chain identity tied to its VIN. The owner can grant a named application scoped permission to the vehicle and withdraw it at any time, after which no new access is issued.

With that permission, an application can read telemetry, request signed attestations of facts such as VIN, odometer, location and vehicle health, and, where the vehicle supports it, send commands such as lock, unlock and charge control. The protocol works across more than 50 vehicle brands through one interface, so developers building rental, fleet, insurance, maintenance, charging or AI-agent products do not need a separate integration with each manufacturer.

The DIMO token has two uses. It is the only way to acquire DIMO Credits (DCX), the non-transferable credit developers spend to access the network, which is burned when used. It also carries governance: holders and delegates vote on DIMO Improvement Proposals (DIPs) covering token parameters, treasury budgets and protocol changes.

Under DIP-12, enacted on 28 August 2026, weekly token issuance to connected-vehicle owners ended, and the protocol's stated direction is for its economics to rest on network fees paid through DCX rather than on token issuance. Holding, locking, delegating or voting DIMO does not entitle a holder to fees, revenue or rewards. On 16 October 2026, an Ethereum governance proposal (EIP-1) burned 150,000,000 DIMO from the treasury, as authorized by DIP-12, reducing total supply to about 848.9 million DIMO.

DIMO Foundation is the legal representative of the DIMO DAO. Digital Infrastructure Inc., the company that first developed DIMO, contributes code to the open-source protocol.
