According to VeChain’s VET MiCAR white paper, VET has a fixed maximum supply of 86,712,634,466 tokens. No additional VET can be created.
VET holders do not receive ownership, equity or corporate governance rights in the VeChain Foundation. Protocol participation is conducted through the network’s staking, delegation and governance mechanisms.
VTHO does not have a fixed maximum supply. It is dynamically generated through actively staked VET and consumed when users and applications perform transactions on VeChainThor.
Where Can You Buy VeChain (VET)?
VET is available through a range of centralized and decentralized trading venues. Available exchanges, trading pairs and services vary by jurisdiction.
Users intending to use VET for VeChainThor applications or StarGate staking should confirm that their selected platform supports withdrawals through the native VeChainThor network. Current VET markets are listed on CoinMarketCap’s VeChain markets page.
Key Insights
VeChain is a Layer-1 public smart-contract blockchain designed for real-world adoption. VeChainThor supports applications involving supply chains, product provenance, sustainability, digital product passports, tokenized incentives and other forms of verifiable business and consumer data.
VeChainThor is EVM-compatible and includes features such as fee delegation, multi-clause transactions, controllable transaction lifecycles and a dual-token economic model.
The network uses two core tokens: VET, the native asset used for staking and network security, and VTHO, the gas token used to pay for transactions and smart-contract execution.
Following the Hayabusa upgrade in December 2025, VeChainThor operates under Delegated Proof of Stake. VET holders can participate in network security by operating a validator or staking and delegating VET through StarGate.
The ecosystem includes VeBetterDAO, which rewards verified positive actions; VeWorld, the official self-custody wallet; and VeWorld.ai, a platform for building, publishing and hiring AI agents with blockchain-based trust mechanisms.
Introduction
VeChainThor is a public blockchain built to connect blockchain technology with real-world applications. Its infrastructure is used to create verifiable digital records, coordinate incentives and support transactions between businesses, applications and users.
VeChainThor was designed to address common barriers to blockchain adoption. Its native fee-delegation features allow an application or business to pay transaction fees on behalf of users, while multi-clause transactions allow multiple operations to be completed within a single transaction.
The dual-token model separates VET, the network’s primary asset and staking collateral, from VTHO, the token used to pay transaction fees. This structure is intended to reduce the direct effect of VET price movements on application operating costs.
VeChain’s early applications focused on supply-chain management, product authenticity and enterprise data sharing. The ecosystem has since expanded into sustainability, consumer rewards, decentralized governance, staking, digital product passports and AI-agent infrastructure.
Founding and Background
VeChain was founded in 2015 by Sunny Lu. Its early development focused on using blockchain together with technologies such as NFC chips, RFID tags and QR codes to improve product identification, authenticity and supply-chain traceability.
Before launching its public blockchain, VeChain operated using private and consortium-chain infrastructure. The project originally issued VEN as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.
The VeChainThor mainnet launched in June 2018, after which VEN was migrated to the native VET token. Since then, VeChainThor has supported applications across sectors including supply chains, food safety, automotive records, sustainability, consumer engagement and digital product information.
VeChain materials cite enterprise adoption and collaborations involving organizations such as Walmart China, BMW, DNV, PwC and Boston Consulting Group.
The VeChain Foundation supports the development and adoption of VeChainThor and its wider ecosystem. VeChain Foundation San Marino S.R.L. has published MiCAR-compliant white papers for VET and VTHO for their admission to trading through applicable European crypto-asset service providers.
Dual-Token Model
VeChainThor uses VET and VTHO for separate functions.
VTHO is the network’s gas token. It is used to pay for transactions and smart-contract execution.
Separating the network asset from the transaction-fee token allows VeChainThor’s operating costs to be managed independently from VET’s market price.
Following Hayabusa, new VTHO is generated through actively staked VET instead of passively by all VET holders. VTHO generation is dynamic and varies according to the amount of VET securing the network and other protocol parameters.
Fee Delegation
VeChainThor supports native fee delegation, allowing an application, business or designated sponsor to pay transaction fees on behalf of a user.
This means users can interact with a VeChain application without first acquiring or managing VTHO. For consumer and enterprise applications, this can create an experience closer to that of a conventional web or mobile application.
Multi-Clause Transactions
A single VeChainThor transaction can contain multiple clauses and perform several operations. For example, one transaction may transfer assets, interact with a smart contract and record data without requiring each operation to be submitted separately.
VeChainThor also supports transaction dependency and lifecycle controls. Developers can specify when a transaction becomes valid, when it expires and whether it depends on the completion of another transaction.
EVM Compatibility
VeChainThor is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, allowing developers to use Solidity and familiar smart-contract development tools.
The Galactica upgrade aligned VeChainThor with Ethereum’s Shanghai EVM version. The ongoing Interstellar roadmap includes further work towards broader EVM and JSON-RPC equivalence.
VeChain Renaissance
VeChain Renaissance is a multi-stage protocol roadmap designed to modernize VeChainThor’s technical architecture, staking system, tokenomics and governance.
Galactica
The Galactica upgrade launched in July 2025. It introduced an EIP-1559-style dynamic fee market, priority fees for validators and the burning of transaction base fees.
Galactica also aligned VeChainThor’s EVM implementation with Ethereum’s Shanghai version and introduced additional developer and transaction-processing improvements.
StarGate
StarGate is VeChain’s staking platform. It launched in July 2025 and introduced staking positions represented by NFTs.
Users stake VET to mint a StarGate NFT representing their committed VET and associated staking attributes. Eligible staking NFTs can be delegated to validators, allowing holders to participate in network security and receive VTHO rewards.
Staking NFTs can also provide access to applicable VeChainThor governance processes.
Hayabusa
Hayabusa activated on the VeChainThor mainnet on December 2, 2025. It replaced VeChainThor’s previous Proof-of-Authority consensus with Delegated Proof of Stake.
Hayabusa introduced:
Validator and delegator participation through staked VET.
Dynamic, staking-based VTHO issuance.
Stake-weighted consensus and finality.
Onchain validator and delegation management.
Broader participation in network governance.
Removal of passive VTHO generation from unstaked VET.
VeChainThor supports an active set of up to 101 validators. Validators must provide at least 25 million VET in self-stake and maintain the technical infrastructure required to produce and validate blocks.
Interstellar
Interstellar is the next phase of VeChain Renaissance. VeChain’s 2026 roadmap includes planned work involving interoperability, broader EVM and JSON-RPC equivalence, real-world-asset attestations, improved developer infrastructure and tools that allow AI agents to interact with VeChainThor.
Interstellar is an ongoing roadmap phase, and its individual components will become available as they are released.
VET Staking and Rewards
VET holders can participate in VeChainThor’s Delegated Proof-of-Stake system as validators or delegators.
Delegators stake VET through StarGate, mint a staking NFT and delegate that NFT to a selected validator. This allows delegators to contribute to network security without operating validator infrastructure.
Protocol rewards are paid in VTHO. They are currently distributed between validators and delegators using a default 30%/70% allocation, subject to network parameters and individual validator terms.
Reward rates are variable and depend on factors including total VET staked, validator performance, delegation conditions and protocol parameters. Staking rewards are not fixed or guaranteed.
VeBetterDAO
VeBetter is VeChain’s consumer-focused application ecosystem for recording and rewarding verifiable positive actions.
Developed from VeChain’s sustainability strategy in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group, VeBetter connects real-world activities with blockchain-based proofs and token incentives.
Applications within VeBetter can reward activities such as:
Using reusable products.
Purchasing sustainable or healthy food.
Exercising and improving personal wellbeing.
Participating in environmental cleanups.
Walking, cycling or using lower-emission transport.
Driving or charging electric vehicles.
Applications submit proofs of eligible user actions and distribute rewards according to their respective rules. Examples include GreenCart, Mugshot, Cleanify, Green Commuter, EVearn and Build Your Body.
By early 2026, VeChain reported that VeBetter had grown to more than 50 live applications and recorded over 50 million verified actions.
VeBetter uses two primary ecosystem tokens:
B3TR: The incentive and value token used to reward eligible activities and support applications and treasury functions.
VOT3: The governance token used to vote on ecosystem allocations and proposals.
B3TR can be converted to VOT3 at a 1:1 ratio. Community members use VOT3 to vote on weekly B3TR allocations among eligible applications and participate in VeBetterDAO governance.
B3TR and VOT3 are VeBetter ecosystem tokens and are separate from VeChainThor’s core VET and VTHO tokens.
VeWorld.ai and AgentSuite
VeWorld.ai is VeChain’s platform for building, publishing and hiring AI agents.
Its AgentSuite consists of three components:
AgentForge: A no-code tool for creating AI agents based on a creator’s knowledge and instructions.
AgentMarket: A marketplace where AI agents can be published, discovered and hired.
AgentTrust: A blockchain-based trust layer for agent and creator identities, work histories, reputation signals and smart-contract-based transaction protection.
AgentTrust uses VeChainThor to provide verifiable records for interactions between AI agents, creators and customers. VeWorld.ai extends VeChain’s real-world data infrastructure into the emerging AI-agent economy.
VeWorld.ai is separate from the VeWorld self-custody wallet.
VeWorld Wallet
VeWorld is VeChain’s official self-custody wallet and ecosystem interface. It is available through mobile applications and browser extensions.
