Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya has predicted that Bitcoin could go to zero in the wake of a major hack, framing a credible security failure as the scenario most likely to collapse confidence in the world's largest cryptocurrency. The claim is a conditional prediction, not a report of an event that has occurred.

What Chamath Palihapitiya Predicted About Bitcoin and a Hack

Palihapitiya, a prominent early Bitcoin advocate and Social Capital founder, has long held views on Bitcoin's existential risks alongside his bullish positions. His prediction ties a catastrophic valuation outcome directly to a security failure, arguing that a sufficiently serious hack would destroy the foundational trust that underpins Bitcoin's value proposition. For related coverage, see FINMA Approves Swiss Retail Bitcoin ETF Diversification Exemption.

The prediction is conditional: Bitcoin going to zero is presented as the outcome of a hack, not an independent price call. That distinction matters. Palihapitiya is not forecasting a price collapse on current fundamentals; he is identifying a specific threat vector that he believes the market has not fully priced in. Searches for the specific statement across major platforms confirm active circulation of this claim, though the original source should be traced to Palihapitiya's own statements directly.

The Precise Scenario

The claim is not that Bitcoin's protocol will be broken in a routine sense. It is that a hack of sufficient scale, whether targeting a major exchange, custodian, or some other critical piece of infrastructure, could trigger a confidence collapse that no recovery rally could reverse. The target and scale of such an event would determine whether markets treat it as an isolated incident or a systemic failure.

Why a Major Bitcoin Security Failure Could Test Confidence

Bitcoin's value rests partly on the perception that it is secure, scarce, and censorship-resistant. A breach that calls any of those properties into question, even at the infrastructure layer rather than the protocol layer, can still shake holder conviction. This is the distinction Palihapitiya's scenario implies: the Bitcoin protocol itself has never been successfully hacked, but the ecosystem around it has suffered repeated, costly failures at exchanges and custodians.

The difference between a protocol-level failure and a service-level hack is significant. Losses at an exchange or custodian, however large, do not alter Bitcoin's underlying supply or transaction rules. What they can alter is the willingness of institutional and retail holders to remain exposed, particularly if the hack is large enough to generate regulatory panic or media-driven bank-run dynamics. Bitcoin's largest holders adding nearly 89,000 BTC in a single month reflects current conviction levels, but conviction can reverse quickly when trust erodes.

Palihapitiya's scenario also implicitly challenges the idea that Bitcoin is too large to be fatally wounded by a single event. Critics of this view, including those who argue Bitcoin's decentralization insulates it from single points of failure, would note that no individual actor controls enough Bitcoin to collapse the network. Defenders of Palihapitiya's position counter that markets are psychological, not purely rational, and a dramatic enough hack would overwhelm logic with fear. The broader debate over Bitcoin's long-term viability has attracted other prominent skeptics making comparably stark claims.

Regulatory response to a major hack could amplify the damage. Governments that have already debated extending futures-style oversight to cash Bitcoin markets would face immediate pressure to act, potentially triggering restrictions that further suppress demand at the worst possible moment. Institutional exposure, growing rapidly through vehicles like BlackRock's buffered Bitcoin ETF, would create additional forced-selling pressure if fund redemptions spiked.

TLDR Keypoints

Chamath Palihapitiya's "goes to zero" statement is a prediction tied to a hypothetical hack scenario, not a report of a current event or an unconditional price forecast.

The severity of any impact would depend entirely on the nature, scale, and target of the security failure; a protocol-level breach carries far greater systemic risk than an exchange-level hack.

Market confidence, not technical fundamentals alone, would determine whether a major hack triggers a containable selloff or the kind of irreversible confidence collapse Palihapitiya describes.
