As per CoinGecko data, the total crypto market cap sits at $2.82 trillion, down 2.5% in the last 24 hours. Daily trading volume is at $90.2 billion. Bitcoin dominance holds at 58.2% and Ethereum dominance stands at 10.4%. That tells you money is still parking itself in the two biggest coins rather than leaving crypto completely.

Zoom into smaller tokens and the picture looks far worse than the big three suggest. These are today's top crypto losers, as per CoinGecko data, and they show panic selling spreading well past Bitcoin and Ethereum into smaller, thinly traded coins.

$393 Million Wiped Out In One Day

As per CoinGlass data, 96,102 traders got liquidated in the past 24 hours, for a combined $393.93 million. The single largest order was an $11.78 million BTCUSDT position on Binance. Long positions absorbed $265.11 million of the damage against $128.81 million in shorts.
That means most traders were still betting on a bounce right before the floor gave way under them, and exchanges force-closed those bets automatically once prices broke key levels.

Why is Crypto Market Down Today: Hacks, Warnings, Funds

Several separate stories are stacking on top of each other today, and together they explain the reason behind the drop.

CoinDCX Faces a Suspected $16 Million Hack

What happened: On-chain investigator Darcy flagged that on October 21, about 15.99 million USDT and 5,784 TRX moved from CoinDCX hot wallets and deposit addresses to a single TRON address. One transfer alone was 15.82 million USDT. The funds were then split and routed to deposit addresses at Binance, OKX and Gate.
CoinDCX’s response: The exchange said the flagged addresses were legacy wallets deprecated after its July 2025 breach. It attributed the losses to user deposit errors combined with a failure in its automated sweeping process. CoinDCX says it absorbed the losses in full, credited affected users, and that customer assets remain in segregated cold storage, with active hot wallets unaffected.
Why it matters: The theft itself has not been officially confirmed, so the cause is still disputed. But CoinDCX already lost roughly $44 million in the July 2025 hack, and a second incident, even if framed as an operational failure, erodes trust in one of India’s largest exchanges. Security scares like this are a big reason why the crypto market is down today for many traders: they push investors toward caution, especially around centralized platforms.

CZ Warns of Critical PHP Flaws Hitting WordPress and Magento

What happened:Binance founder CZ told users on X to stay careful online over the coming days. He pointed to two critical PHP vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, affecting servers running WordPress and Magento.
The details: Both were patched on October 21 after details leaked early. The flaws could let attackers run malicious code and steal login details, and exploitation attempts are already being seen.
Why it matters:Many crypto-related sites, storefronts and phishing-prone login pages run on WordPress or Magento. Until sites are patched, users face a higher risk of compromised credentials. Practical steps: avoid clicking unfamiliar links, use hardware keys or authenticator apps for two-factor authentication, and double-check URLs before logging in.

a16z Drops “Crypto” From Its Flagship Fund Name

What happened: According to The Information, a16z, one of crypto’s largest venture investors, is reportedly dropping “Crypto” from its flagship fund name and widening its focus beyond digital assets. A founding member is also said to be leaving.
The numbers: Its fifth crypto fund closed at $2.2 billion in May 2026, roughly half the $4.5 billion raised for its fourth fund in 2022.
Why it matters: Even big-money believers appear to be pulling back from crypto-only bets. Venture funding shapes which projects get built, so a more diversified a16z can signal softer institutional appetite for dedicated crypto exposure. It also feeds the mood behind why the crypto market is down today, since sentiment often tracks what major institutions do.

OCC Finalizes First GENIUS Act Rule on Stablecoins

What happened: The OCC finalized its first GENIUS Act rule, effective January 18, 2027. It covers stablecoin issuance, custody and partnerships.
The yield issue: Existing yield and rewards programs get no automatic grandfathering or safe harbor, so each will be judged case by case. The rule bans paying yield purely for holding, using or keeping a stablecoin, though rewards based partly on other factors may still pass.
Who’s affected: That leaves programs at Coinbase, PayPal and Kraken in a grey zone for now, with no official word yet on how they will adjust.
Why it matters:Stablecoin rewards are a major draw for users and a revenue lever for platforms. Uncertainty over whether those programs survive adds regulatory pressure on top of the security and funding headlines.

What Next: Fed Meeting And SEI ETF In Focus

The next big trigger is just six days out. The Fed meets on October 28, and as per FedWatch tool data, traders see an 89.5% chance of no rate cut against just a 10.5% chance of a 25 bps cut. That caution over interest rates is weighing on the broader market right now, crypto included.
Separately, the REX-Osprey Staked SEI ETF filing is set to turn effective on October 23. That's a regulatory step forward for the product, not a confirmed trading launch or proof of fund inflows yet, so it's one to watch rather than treat as settled.
So, why is crypto market down today in one line? It's forced selling from $393.93 million in liquidations, a fresh CoinDCX hack scare, a big venture firm stepping back, tighter stablecoin rules, and nerves ahead of the Fed, all landing on the same day.
Expert Opinion: Analysts tracking today's session note that the crash lines up more with liquidation mechanics than with any single piece of bad news. With $265.11 million in long positions wiped out, as per CoinGlass data, a large share of the drop looks forced rather than chosen, since leveraged bets got closed automatically once prices broke key levels.
The CoinDCX situation and the OCC's new stablecoin rule add genuine uncertainty, but Bitcoin and Ethereum dominance holding steady near 58.2% and 10.4% suggests capital rotated toward safety inside crypto rather than leaving it altogether. The Fed decision on October 28 is likely to matter more for near-term direction than any single hack headline.
