DFINITY (@dfinity) founder Dominic Williams (@dominic_w) has publicly questioned the privacy design of Near (@NEARProtocol) Confidential Intents, citing a review by a PhD engineer. The criticism targets $NEAR's privacy layer for cross-chain trading and comes as the token trades higher on separate ecosystem news. Williams is the founder of the Internet Computer ($ICP), a competing blockchain network.

What Williams Alleges

Williams shared the engineer's assessment, which alleges the system relies on a separate permissioned network called FAR, where operators are trusted to protect private data. The review also questioned the privacy technology itself, the feature's open-source status and the fact that node operators have not been disclosed.

According to CoinPedia, Williams described the setup as running on unknown centralized nodes and not open source, and implied the network could be one of the overpromised Web3 projects. The same report says some supporters agreed with his doubts, while most replies came from critics who contrasted the weaker ICP price with NEAR's performance.

The claims are Williams' and the engineer's. NEAR has not been shown to have responded to the specific allegations in the material reviewed for this article.

How NEAR Describes Confidential Intents

NEAR positions Confidential Intents as a way to protect trading activity on its cross-chain system. In its product announcement, the project says users can toggle between a Main Account and a Confidential Account, opting into confidentiality across transfers, deposits and withdrawals. NEAR says the aim is to prevent MEV extraction, frontrunning and strategy copying.

On architecture, Glitchwire reports that transactions are routed through a dedicated NEAR private shard, described as a parallel execution environment run by a decentralized set of permissioned validators. The shard connects to NEAR's mainnet through a bridge built on Trusted Execution Environments. The same report says NEAR states the product is not a mixing or anonymization tool and includes selective disclosure for regulatory compliance.

The description of a permissioned validator set overlaps with part of Williams' critique, though the sources differ on how they characterize it. The dispute centres on how much users must trust those operators, and on what NEAR has disclosed about the validators and underlying technology.

Why It Matters

Privacy tooling is a growing area of cross-chain DeFi, and design choices such as who operates the infrastructure and whether the code is public bear directly on how much trust users place in it. The exchange also reflects ongoing competition between NEAR and Internet Computer, whose founders have traded technical criticism in the past.

Readers weighing the claims may want to look for independent audits, validator disclosures and published code from NEAR as the debate develops.
