Bitcoin Core developers have changed their security rules after artificial intelligence tools helped researchers identify thousands of potential vulnerabilities across the broader Bitcoin ecosystem, raising concerns that traditional methods of keeping software flaws secret are becoming less effective.
The policy update, merged on October 22, introduces faster disclosure and patching for vulnerabilities that can be discovered with minimal effort, including through a simple AI prompt.
According to the <a href="https://bitcoincore.org/en/security-advisories/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">official Bitcoin Core security policy</a>, developers will now release fixes for these easily discoverable vulnerabilities across maintained software versions without waiting for the lengthy embargo periods that previously applied. Why Bitcoin Core Is Abandoning Long Security Embargoes
Bitcoin Core has traditionally delayed public disclosure of certain vulnerabilities to give node operators time to update before attackers learn how to exploit them.
Medium- and high-severity flaws could remain undisclosed for approximately a year, depending on when affected software versions reached the end of their support periods.
However, artificial intelligence is changing that calculation.
Bitcoin Core contributor Antoine Poinsot explained in an <a href="https://mirror.b10c.me/lists/bitcoindev/1ehBdwhbU-1cUjU5SjRxn75XNUBvIfNbkfqPCJRFPlOfsBu5gHWotmNRNxcMirTl1baT2H-zBfJMeWM6rl-XJG8zV6gHf8vQ9b_TRB9vnIk%3D%40antoinep.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">October 22 developer announcement</a> that large language models have made some security flaws significantly easier to identify or rediscover independently.
Under the revised approach, developers can classify a vulnerability as easily discoverable, distribute fixes to every maintained major version and publish a security advisory alongside the updates.
The <a href="https://github.com/bitcoin-core/bitcoincore.org/pull/1281" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">GitHub proposal</a> was submitted October 16 and merged six days later.
Other vulnerabilities will continue following severity-based disclosure schedules, while critical Bitcoin network security issues require individual handling.
The change follows previous debates over <a href="https://coinpaper.com/11539/what-the-bitcoin-core-30-0-update-means-for-the-future-of-btc" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin Core upgrades</a>, where developers have balanced new functionality with security and network stability.AI Security Review Flags Nearly 5,000 Potential Bitcoin Bugs
The urgency became apparent during a large AI-assisted security review earlier this year.
In approximately 30 hours, a volunteer Bitcoin Red Team consisting of 16 developers examined 390 Bitcoin-related software projects.
The researchers reported 4,962 potential security issues, including 85 initially classified as critical and 635 as high severity.
Coinpaper previously documented the <a href="https://coinpaper.com/33961/bitcoin-red-team-flags-nearly-5000-security-issues-in-30-hours" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin Red Team findings</a>, which demonstrated how automated analysis could produce large numbers of vulnerability reports in a remarkably short period.
However, the numbers require an important distinction.
These were findings across hundreds of Bitcoin-related projects, not confirmed vulnerabilities in Bitcoin Core itself. Many required additional verification, and the classifications were preliminary.
Some vulnerabilities identified through the wider security effort were nevertheless serious.
In August, payment processor BTCPay Server faced an actively exploited vulnerability that exposed credentials associated with Lightning Network nodes.
The incident forced an <a href="https://coinpaper.com/34076/btcpay-server-restricts-lightning-access-after-exploit-drains-lnd-nodes" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">emergency security response</a>, including restrictions on remote Lightning access.
Another Bitcoin infrastructure provider, Boltz, temporarily <a href="https://coinpaper.com/33860/boltz-bitcoin-swaps-disabled-what-happened-and-are-user-funds-safe" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">disabled swap services</a> after reporting automated attacks involving AI-assisted techniques.Could Faster Bitcoin Security Updates Introduce New Risks?
The revised disclosure rules may help node operators receive important fixes earlier, but accelerated releases create their own challenges.
Poinsot acknowledged that patches distributed rapidly may receive less testing before reaching users.
Developers also debated whether some security advisories should remain private until additional protections were available.
The final approach favors publishing an advisory alongside an expedited fix for vulnerabilities considered easy to rediscover, rather than issuing warnings without an available update.
The concerns extend beyond software running Bitcoin nodes.
A separate Coldcard hardware-wallet vulnerability resulted in major Bitcoin thefts earlier this year, prompting renewed attention to <a href="https://coinpaper.com/33908/coldcard-hack-update-at-least-15-attackers-exploited-wallet-flaw" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">wallet security</a>.
That incident did not involve a vulnerability in Bitcoin Core, but it demonstrated how weaknesses in surrounding infrastructure can endanger cryptocurrency holdings even when the underlying blockchain continues operating normally.
Coinpaper's <a href="https://coinpaper.com/33928/can-hardware-wallets-be-hacked-what-the-coldcard-hack-reveals" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">hardware-wallet analysis</a> also explains why secure key generation and updated firmware remain essential protections.
