Electrum, one of the oldest and most widely used Bitcoin wallets, has released version 4.8.3 to fix a security flaw that allowed malicious servers to steal Bitcoin from users. If you use Electrum and have not updated yet, this is an urgent action item.

Malicious Electrum servers linked to Bitcoin theft

Electrum is a software wallet, meaning you install it on your computer to store and send Bitcoin. It connects to a network of servers to check balances and broadcast transactions. That server connection is where the risk appeared. Malicious actors ran fraudulent servers within the Electrum network. These rogue servers were able to exploit a security flaw in older versions of the wallet software. According to the Electrum project's release history on GitHub, version 4.8.3 was published specifically to address this vulnerability. The attack vector, a rogue server sending harmful data to a connected wallet, is a known category of threat. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency tracks this class of software exploitation under its malware and phishing advisories. Wallet software that trusts external servers without proper validation can be manipulated into taking unintended actions, including redirecting funds. The exact amount of Bitcoin stolen and the number of users affected have not been confirmed in verified public disclosures. This article does not speculate on those figures. What is established is that a real flaw existed, real Bitcoin was taken, and a fix has been issued.
Threats to self-custody wallets are a recurring concern in the Bitcoin ecosystem. Questions about whether software vulnerabilities could undermine Bitcoin's security model are worth understanding, though this incident involves a targeted software flaw rather than a cryptographic one.

What Electrum version 4.8.3 changes

Version 4.8.3 is Electrum's direct response to the reported security flaw. The update closes the vulnerability that malicious servers were exploiting. Users running older versions remain exposed to the same attack vector until they update.
The official Electrum download page at electrum.org is the only safe place to obtain the update. Fake wallet sites are a common secondary attack in situations like this. Searching for "Electrum download" through a search engine can surface fraudulent pages designed to steal seed phrases or install malware. Only use the official domain.
Do not download Electrum from any third-party site, forum link, or file-sharing service. The official GitHub releases page for the Electrum project also lists signed releases, which advanced users can verify against the developer's PGP key to confirm authenticity.

What Electrum users should do now

First, check which version of Electrum you are running. Open the wallet and look under the Help menu for version information. If you are on anything older than 4.8.3, update immediately.
Second, after updating, review your recent transaction history for any sends you did not authorize. If you see unexplained outgoing transactions, your wallet may have been compromised before you updated. In that case, move any remaining funds to a new wallet address generated fresh within the updated software, or consider using a hardware wallet for long-term storage.
Third, if you generated a new seed phrase or wallet file while connected to an untrusted server, treat that seed as potentially compromised. A malicious server cannot extract your seed phrase directly, but depending on the nature of the flaw, it may have been able to redirect transactions. Until more technical details are publicly confirmed, cautious users should treat affected wallets as suspect and migrate funds.
Wallet security events like this are a reminder that Bitcoin's underlying network remains intact even when software built on top of it has flaws. The Bitcoin protocol itself was not compromised. The vulnerability was in the application layer, specifically in how the Electrum client handled server responses.
The core takeaway: update to Electrum 4.8.3 from the official site only, check your transaction history, and move funds to a fresh wallet if anything looks wrong.
