Zero

Bitcoin

Chamath Palihapitiya, the venture capitalist and longtime Bitcoin advocate, has warned that a catastrophic hack targeting Bitcoin's core infrastructure could drive the asset's price to zero. The prediction is explicitly conditional: Palihapitiya frames it not as an inevitable outcome but as the tail-risk scenario that would most severely test market confidence in the network.

What Chamath Palihapitiya Said About Bitcoin Going to Zero

Palihapitiya's warning centers on a specific failure mode: a successful attack against Bitcoin's underlying protocol or network security. In his framing, such an event would shatter the foundational assumption that Bitcoin's ledger is immutable and its transaction rules are enforceable, the two properties that give the asset its monetary value proposition.

The prediction is a conditional one, not a forecast of likely outcomes. Palihapitiya has previously expressed strong conviction in Bitcoin as a long-term store of value, including his early 2013 prediction that Bitcoin would reach $100,000, a call that took nearly a decade to materialize. His zero-price warning exists in the same analytical framework: identify the structural dependencies, then ask what breaks if the most critical one fails.

What to Know

Palihapitiya's zero-price scenario is a conditional prediction, not a market forecast. The stated trigger is a major hack of Bitcoin's network or protocol layer.

No such breach has occurred. Bitcoin's base-layer protocol has never been successfully compromised since its 2009 launch.

Palihapitiya has made several high-profile macro calls in recent years, including warnings about a US liquidity crisis and pointed criticism of Federal Reserve policy choices in 2025. His Bitcoin security warning fits a pattern of stress-testing institutional assumptions rather than offering near-term price guidance.

Why a Major Hack Could Test Confidence in Bitcoin

The critical distinction in evaluating this warning is the difference between attacks on Bitcoin's periphery and an attack on the protocol itself. Exchange hacks, wallet compromises, and phishing campaigns steal bitcoin from individuals but leave the underlying network intact. A protocol-level breach, by contrast, would call into question whether any transaction record in the blockchain is reliable.

Bitcoin's value rests on a specific set of guarantees: that the 21 million coin supply cap will be enforced, that confirmed transactions cannot be reversed, and that no single party can arbitrarily rewrite the ledger. If a sufficiently powerful adversary could violate any of these properties, holders would face the prospect of owning an asset whose defining characteristics had been negated. The rational response in that scenario, Palihapitiya's logic implies, would be a rapid exit from the asset at any price.

Market confidence can deteriorate faster than technology. Even a credible demonstration that an attack vector exists, short of a full exploit, could trigger preemptive selling as holders weigh the probability that the vulnerability will be exploited before it is patched. This dynamic has played out in smaller proof-of-work networks, where the announcement of a 51% attack, or even its theoretical feasibility against a shrinking miner base, has caused double-digit price declines within hours.

Bitcoin's Security Model and the Limits of the Prediction

Bitcoin's defense against protocol-level compromise is its proof-of-work consensus mechanism and the economic incentive structure surrounding it. To rewrite the blockchain, an attacker would need to control more than 50% of the global hashrate continuously for long enough to build an alternative chain longer than the honest chain. At Bitcoin's current scale, that represents an investment in hardware and energy that would cost tens of billions of dollars, and any attacker who succeeded would simultaneously destroy the value of the asset they were targeting.

The decentralized nature of Bitcoin's node network adds a second layer of defense. Even if a majority-hashrate attacker rewrote recent transaction history, the change would violate Bitcoin's consensus rules if it altered the supply cap or transaction format. Full nodes operated by tens of thousands of independent participants would reject an invalid chain regardless of its proof-of-work weight. This is the property that distinguishes Bitcoin's security model from purely hashrate-dependent networks.

Palihapitiya's zero-price scenario therefore requires not just a computational breakthrough but a simultaneous failure of economic incentives, node operator coordination, and developer response. That combination is theoretically possible, particularly in the context of advances in quantum computing that could eventually threaten elliptic curve cryptography, but it is not a near-term operational risk against the current network. Bitcoin developers have actively tracked post-quantum cryptography research precisely because this long-horizon threat is taken seriously within the protocol development community.

The gap between a severe disruption and a permanent loss of all value also matters here. Historical evidence from Bitcoin's own history, including the 2010 value overflow incident that briefly allowed the creation of 184 billion coins before being patched within hours, suggests that the network's developer community and node operators can coordinate rapid responses to discovered vulnerabilities. A hack that proved fixable would likely damage confidence and price severely without driving the asset permanently to zero.

Palihapitiya's broader analytical approach, which includes his recent commentary on the economic impact of US tariff policy and a $250 million SPAC targeting AI and DeFi, reflects a framework that prizes asymmetric risk identification over consensus forecasting. His Bitcoin zero-price warning is best understood in that context: a tail-risk scenario worth taking seriously precisely because most market participants dismiss it entirely.
