Ripple Prime's expansion into round-the-clock stock and commodity derivatives trading is facing scrutiny from HSBC, which warns that limited liquidity could prevent large financial institutions from fully embracing the new service.
The warning follows Ripple's October 15 launch of perpetual swaps linked to more than 100 traditional markets, including equities, exchange-traded funds, metals, energy and foreign currencies.
According to <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/10/21/ripple-brings-wall-street-into-24-7-stock-bets-but-hsbc-warns-markets-are-still-thin" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">October 21 report</a>, HSBC's head of digital assets research, Daragh Maher, described the development as ”evolutionary, not revolutionary,” questioning whether sufficient trading activity exists to accommodate large institutional positions.Ripple Prime Opens 100+ Markets to 24/7 Trading
Ripple Prime allows institutional clients to trade swaps referencing perpetual futures listed by Trade.xyz on Hyperliquid, a decentralized derivatives platform.
Unlike traditional stock trading, these contracts remain available throughout weekends and holidays. However, they provide exposure to price movements rather than direct ownership of the underlying shares.
Ripple's <a href="https://ripple.com/ripple-press/ripple-launches-support-for-institutions-to-access-real-world-asset-perpetual-swaps/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">initial announcement</a> confirmed that trading firm Virtu was already using the service.
The launch builds on Ripple Prime's <a href="https://coinpaper.com/37382/xrp-news-ripples-new-trading-platform-connects-wall-street-to-100-markets-but-does-xrp-benefit" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">expansion into 100 markets</a>, with Ripple USD (RLUSD) available as collateral for eligible institutional clients.
Ripple Prime's broader <a href="https://coinpaper.com/36910/ripple-prime-wins-35b-brevan-howard-where-does-xrp-fit" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">institutional brokerage business</a> handles clearing, financing and risk management across traditional and digital assets.
Yet providing access to markets around the clock is different from guaranteeing sufficient liquidity to execute large trades.HSBC Warns Thin Markets Could Restrict Institutional Trading
Maher argued that perpetual markets tracking traditional assets remain relatively small compared with the established exchanges whose prices they follow.
A hedge fund seeking to enter or exit a multimillion-dollar position needs sufficient counterparties. Without them, large orders can cause substantial price movements, wider spreads and unexpected trading losses.
HSBC expects early demand to come primarily from market makers, proprietary trading firms and hedge funds conducting arbitrage or basis trades rather than institutions pursuing large, long-term hedging strategies.
The risks became apparent on October 17, when approximately $51.6 million in leveraged positions linked to semiconductor stocks and funds were liquidated within ten minutes.
Around $38 million involved long positions, according to market data cited by CoinDesk. The selling occurred while U.S. stock exchanges were closed, leaving derivatives traders without continuously updated underlying share prices.
The incident illustrates why <a href="https://coinpaper.com/32504/dtccs-24x5-clearing-goes-live-as-ripple-prime-connects-wall-street-with-the-xrp-ledger" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">extended market access</a> requires reliable price discovery and risk controls alongside faster trading infrastructure. What Does HSBC's Warning Mean for XRP and RLUSD?
Ripple Prime's offering provides another potential institutional use case for RLUSD, which clients can use to support margin requirements across eligible positions.
 That follows Ripple's <a href="https://coinpaper.com/13814/ripple-supercharges-institutional-rlusd-liquidity-and-stablecoin-adoption-with-lmax-deal" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">LMAX partnership</a> and its separate <a href="https://coinpaper.com/37343/ripple-and-drivewealth-partner-to-connect-us-stock-trading-with-rlusd-settlement-on-xrp-ledger" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">DriveWealth collaboration</a>, both aimed at expanding stablecoin services in traditional finance.
However, the perpetual swaps reference instruments traded through Hyperliquid, not securities issued directly on XRP Ledger. Ripple has not identified XRP as a required settlement or collateral asset.
The distinction also matters for Ripple's existing <a href="https://coinpaper.com/17161/bridging-wall-street-and-crypto-ripple-prime-and-edx-to-redefine-institutional-liquidity-access-with-rlusd-in-the-picture" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">institutional liquidity partnerships</a>, where increased brokerage activity does not automatically translate into XRP purchases.
