U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds attracted $528 million in net inflows on October 22, while ether funds reversed a five-day run of outflows, offering a split picture of institutional appetite across the two largest crypto asset classes.

Bitcoin ETFs attract $528 million in fresh inflows

Bitcoin ETF inflows reached $528 million in a single session, according to data tracked by Farside Investors. The figure represents a meaningful single-day demand reading for the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market, which has seen uneven flow patterns since products launched in January 2024. For related coverage, see FINMA Approves Switzerland’s First Retail Spot Bitcoin ETF.

The inflow total arrived as Bitcoin continued to trade near elevated levels. Investors tracking BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust and the broader ETF complex have noted that single-day spikes of this size tend to cluster around periods of price momentum, though flow data alone does not confirm a sustained directional shift.

It is worth noting what the $528 million figure does not tell us: the breakdown across individual issuers is not yet available in confirmed form, and a single session's inflow can be reversed the following day. Farside's historical Bitcoin ETF flow tracker shows that daily totals have swung from deep outflows to large inflows within consecutive sessions throughout 2025 and 2026.

Grayscale's move to open in-kind creation and redemption for its Bitcoin ETF has been cited by analysts as a structural change that could reduce the persistent outflow pressure that weighed on the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust in earlier periods, potentially making aggregate inflow readings more reliable as a sentiment gauge going forward.

Ether funds end a five-day outflow streak

Ether ETFs also recorded net positive flows on the day, ending a streak of five consecutive sessions of outflows, according to Farside's Ethereum ETF tracker. The dollar size of the reversal was not confirmed in the available data, so the ether result is best read as a directional shift rather than a comparable headline number.

The five-day outflow streak had placed ether funds in contrast with Bitcoin products during a period when Bitcoin was testing range highs. Analysts following Bitcoin's resistance at key price levels have observed that institutional flows between Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs do not always move in the same direction, reflecting different risk appetites and use-case narratives for each asset.

Ether ETFs have faced a structural challenge since their U.S. launch: staking yield, which holders of ETH on-chain can earn, is not available inside the ETF wrapper under current SEC rules. That gap has made ether ETFs less attractive on a yield-adjusted basis for some institutional buyers, and it contributes to the more volatile flow pattern relative to Bitcoin products.

What the diverging crypto fund flows indicate

When Bitcoin ETFs draw large inflows while ether funds are simultaneously bleeding capital, the divergence is often read as a rotation rather than a broad risk-on move. The reversal in ether flows on the same day Bitcoin attracted $528 million adds nuance: both assets appear to have found buyers, but from a different starting point.

Fund flows into regulated ETF wrappers reflect changing investor positioning, but they are a lagging and incomplete signal. Inflows can reflect new allocations, rebalancing, or arbitrage activity, and a single session's data does not distinguish between them. The evolution of Bitcoin ETF product structures, including variants with downside buffers and capped returns, suggests the issuer community is targeting a wider range of risk profiles, which itself could amplify both inflow and outflow volatility over time.

The bull case from Thursday's data is straightforward: demand for regulated crypto exposure remained robust for Bitcoin, and ether finally caught a bid after five days of selling pressure. The bear case is that a single session of positive flows for ether, without a confirmed dollar total, does not constitute a trend reversal, and the Bitcoin inflow figure needs to be sustained across multiple sessions before it signals a durable shift in institutional positioning. Whether subsequent flow data confirms or contradicts Thursday's readings will determine how much weight the market places on today's numbers.
