Reversal

Bitcoin

Bitcoin goes into October having pushed through the $80,000-$83,000 resistance zone and touched roughly $87,000 along the way. It also closed a week above the 50-week moving average near $81,000, something it had not managed in months.
&nbsp;
What nobody knows yet is whether there is enough momentum left to keep it there. To judge that you have to go back to August 2026, when a bitcoin short squeeze carried the price from $63,000 to $80,000 between the 18th and the 24th and took $3.07B of bearish positions with it.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
<a style="text-decoration:none" href="https://localtrade.cc/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The LocalTrade</a> research team traced the capital flows behind both moves to answer whether this is an authentic reset in crypto market structure or a flush of overconfident bears.
<h3 id="span-span-strong-key-takeaways-strong-span-span">Key Takeaways</h3>
<ul>
 <li>The Mechanics Behind the Surge — On the way from $63k to $80k the market liquidated<a style="text-decoration:none" href="https://crypto.news/3-billion-short-squeeze-anatomy-crypto-biggest-liquidation-2021-2/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">&nbsp;$3.07B</a> in short contracts, which ranks as the 8th largest event of its kind in crypto history. Regulatory easing, a bigger Treasury buyback program and institutional ETF inflows set it off.&nbsp;</li>
 <li>The Liquidity Asymmetry Reality — Capital flooded exclusively into spot Bitcoin ETFs; $5.3B in volume led by $4B through BlackRock, leaving altcoins and decentralized pools untouched. Retail rotation broke, and liquidity concentrated inside institutional vaults.</li>
 <li>The Technical Invalidation Level — The 50-week moving average near $81k capped every attempt until late September, when BTC broke through the $80k–$83k band and tagged roughly $87k. A real macro reversal now requires that band to hold as support on weekly closes and a decisive break above $87k. A weekly close back below $80k revives the liquidity-sweep scenario.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="span-span-strong-the-liquidation-cascade-and-the-anatomy-of-the-august-short-squeeze-strong-span-span">The Liquidation Cascade and the Anatomy of the August Short Squeeze</h2>
On August 20, the derivatives market broke. Forced closures wiped out $3.07B in short contracts, eighth on the all-time crypto liquidations table. The mechanism is unglamorous. Bears posted collateral, price climbed against them, margin thresholds tripped, and matching engines bought at market to close bankrupt accounts. Those buys hit thin books, price jumped, and the next tier of stops triggered.
&nbsp;
The Fed panic of 2025 worked through the very same machinery, only pointed the other way: liquidity dried up, funds had to cover longs, and the cascade pulled price lower with it. In August 2026 Treasury operations were adding liquidity, so this time it was the leverage on the short side that burned.&nbsp;
<h2 id="span-span-strong-the-three-catalysts-that-realigned-market-liquidity-strong-span-span">The Three Catalysts That Realigned Market Liquidity</h2>
Within about 36 hours three decisions arrived that had nothing to do with each other. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins went first on August 18 with a simThe Treasury followed a day later. Its buybacks of long-dated government bonds went from $2B to $4B, repo yields came down as a result, and bank reserves started drifting toward high-beta collateral.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
That afternoon the White House hosted a crypto summit, and Trump had executives from Coinbase, Ripple, Robinhood, Kraken, Gemini and Chainlink in the room. He told them he wanted the Crypto Clarity Act passed and that the United States would stay the undisputed leader in Bitcoin. He also said the war on crypto was over once and for all, and mentioned that talks were under way about accumulating a significant amount of BTC.&nbsp;
<h2 id="span-span-strong-institutional-spot-etf-inflows-and-corporate-balance-sheet-demand-strong-span-span">Institutional Spot ETF Inflows and Corporate Balance Sheet Demand</h2>
On August 20 daily spot bitcoin ETF volume went past $5.3B. Roughly $4.0B of that passed through BlackRock's IBIT, with Fidelity at $438M and Grayscale at $208M. How the money was split tells us more than the total does. Orders in regulated vehicles go through Wall Street market-making desks and qualified custodians, which means the demand came from physical spot buying and offshore leverage had little to do with it.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Spot buyers cannot be liquidated. They own the asset outright, so a 15% drawdown does not force them out. Perpetual futures offer no such floor. Strive's 1,100 BTC allocation extended the MicroStrategy playbook to a wider set of balance sheets.
<h2 id="span-span-strong-liquidity-exclusion-and-the-reality-of-broken-altcoin-rotation-strong-span-span">Liquidity Exclusion and the Reality of Broken Altcoin Rotation</h2>
Every prior cycle followed one script. Bitcoin would move first, the profits would go into Ethereum, and from there the money spilled down into mid-caps and meme tokens. August 2026 broke it. Ethereum, Solana, and the mid-cap complex registered minimal volume expansion against BTC's 25% move. Uniswap and Curve recorded no depth gains, ruling out non-custodial retail as a driver.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The cause is structural. Capital buying IBIT or FBTC sits inside registered vehicles held in brokerage accounts. An allocator cannot swap ETF shares for a token on a decentralized exchange, so the BTC to ETH to altcoins loop has no exit ramp. The money that comes into Bitcoin simply stays there.&nbsp;Altcoin liquidity will remain starved until ETF holders start realizing gains or retail comes back to DEX venues.&nbsp;
<h2 id="span-span-strong-technical-barriers-and-why-the-50-week-average-governs-the-macro-trend-strong-span-span">Technical Barriers and Why the 50 Week Average Governs the Macro Trend</h2>
Price alone confirms nothing. Watch the right average. The daily lines are of little help here because they sit far below spot, the 50-day SMA at $70,673 and the 200-day at $70,058, and say almost nothing about where this move might stall. What matters is the weekly chart, where the average sits at roughly $81,000. Bitcoin ran into it in late August, tried again in early September, and was turned back both times. Glassnode's take on the late-August push through $80,000 was that it was a relief rally meeting long-term overhead supply, and most of that supply is packed between $81,000 and $86,000.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
September tested both ends. On September 3, Bitcoin got back above the weekly average for the first time since May and touched $82,283 before sellers dragged it into the low $79,000s. The slide ended at $76,563 on September 11. Then came the Fed's rate hike on September 16. BTC dropped toward $75,000 on the news, yet within hours it was trading above $76,000 again. By September 18, it had added more than 5% and was over $80,000, which had not happened since September 7.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The Reverse Jim Cramer indicator added colour on August 21. Cramer told his viewers he would sell BTC, and price went on to clear $77k and $78k and then tag $79k.&nbsp; Entertaining, irrelevant to structure. Weekly closes since the breakout have held above $81,000, which weakens the bearish case by the standard set above. Full confirmation now depends on the reclaimed band holding as support on a retest and on a weekly close above $87,000.
<h2 id="span-span-strong-breaking-the-80k-83k-ceiling-as-regulators-step-in-strong-span-span">Breaking the $80K-$83K Ceiling as Regulators Step In</h2>

Bitcoin cleared the strong resistance zone between $80,000 and $83,000 on political news and a shift in the CLARITY Act storyline. The Senate cloture vote on September 15 failed 49-50, short of the 60 votes needed to open floor debate. Regulators moved to cover the gap almost immediately. Political news and a turn in the CLARITY Act storyline carried Bitcoin through the strong resistance zone between $80,000 and $83,000. On September 15, the Senate cloture vote failed 49-50, short of the 60 votes it takes to open floor debate. Regulators moved to cover the gap almost immediately. Two days later, the SEC issued temporary conditional exemptive relief for distributed ledger venues that trade tokenized NMS stocks. The CFTC, on the same day, sent its pre-rule action on crypto asset transactions and crypto asset markets to the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. The two agencies have been bringing their crypto rules into line since the Project Crypto initiative launched in July 2025, so the market read their response as a substitute track for the stalled bill.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Bitcoin's reaction is ambiguous. It broke a strong resistance level, but it is also repeating a pattern we have already seen. In August, a sharp rally to $80,000 was followed by a pullback into strong support near $76,000 and a break below it before the bullish run resumed. The current move from $87,000 back toward $83,600 could follow the same script, with a retest of the former resistance band and possibly a dip through it before the next leg.
&nbsp;
For now, the most useful advice is to keep stop-losses set and ready for risk. Corporate demand tilts the odds toward higher prices. Strategy bought 950 BTC between September 14 and 20, and another 1,665 BTC between September 21 and 27 at an average of $85,681, its second consecutive weekly purchase, bringing holdings to 847,666 BTC. In the most pessimistic scenario, Bitcoin will need at least two more attempts to break the strong resistance near $87,000 that it tested earlier.

Headlines arrive after the fill. Order flow arrives before it. On LocalTrade, that read runs through JexAI, the platform's AI assistant, which works through the analytics with the trader and can be handed the execution of the trade as well. The question worth answering in real time is narrow. Is size accumulating on the bid, or is price climbing on retail momentum into thin supply?
&nbsp;
August answered it. The $5.3B spot print confirmed institutional absorption underneath the move, which is why the rally held instead of retracing within hours. Traders who checked flow had that read on August 20. Traders watching summit coverage had a narrative.
<h2 id="span-span-strong-outlook-on-market-verification-signals-and-regulatory-timelines-strong-span-span">Outlook on Market Verification Signals and Regulatory Timelines</h2>
Five checkpoints decide whether this consolidates or unwinds. First, the weekly close rule. BTC has reclaimed the 50-week average near $81,000 and now has to keep weekly closes above the $80,000-$83,000 band before taking on $87,000. September's strongest day was a $730.8M net creation on September 3, led by IBIT. Daily flows under the $200M mark indicate an exhausted impulse. Third, the funding rate reset on perpetual swaps, which should stay neutral or slightly negative. Spiking positive funding means retail is chasing leverage and building conditions for a long squeeze.
&nbsp;
Fourth, open interest on CoinGlass should rebuild through spot accumulation rather than hyper-leveraged perpetuals. Fifth, the policy calendar. The CLARITY Act failed its cloture vote on September 15, and the Fed raised rates for the first time in over three years on September 16, with the updated dot plot projecting one more increase before year-end. Regulation now runs through the agencies. Public comment on the SEC's Regulation Crypto Assets stays open until October 20, 2026, and the next FOMC meeting is on October 27 and 28. Agency rules arriving on schedule support the move; a hawkish October or legal challenges to the new rules both invite a re-test. Watch the five, ignore the commentary.
