Crypto is slipping again on Sunday, but this time the pressure does not appear to be coming from a fresh crypto-specific shock.
Bitcoin is trading near $81,084, Ethereum around $2,376, XRP near $1.27 and Solana around $102. The weakness extends further down the largest cryptocurrencies, with XRP, Hyperliquid and Zcash showing particularly heavy seven-day losses.
What makes today unusual is what is happening outside crypto.
Traditional U.S. markets are closed, yet markets linked to U.S. equities are already flashing red ahead of Monday. Tokenized and perpetual versions of Tesla, Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Micron, Samsung and other equities were all trading lower in the latest snapshot.
Crypto may therefore be pricing in some of the fear surrounding Monday before Wall Street even opens.

The Kobeissi Letter noted that U.S. equities just finished their weakest week in roughly 18 months, driven heavily by trouble across AI and semiconductor stocks as well as pressure from elevated oil prices.
Independent market data confirms that technology has been at the center of the stress. Semiconductor stocks just endured one of their worst runs in years, with investor concerns growing over AI spending, valuations and the returns companies are generating from enormous infrastructure investments.
The broader picture is slightly more nuanced than a complete equity-market collapse. MarketWatch reported that technology fell heavily during the week, even as a large share of individual S&P 500 stocks actually finished higher. Investors have been rotating into areas such as healthcare, utilities and consumer staples.
Still, social media discussion around a possible “Black Monday” has accelerated.

Calls for a "Black Monday" are spreading rapidly across social media right now. If history is any guide, this means the S&P 500 should hit 8,000 soon. Ignore the noise. Read our analysis below.— The Kobeissi Letter (@KobeissiLetter) October 18, 2026

Kobeissi itself pushed back against the dramatic comparisons with 1987, telling traders to “ignore the noise.” So the point is not that another Black Monday is inevitable.
The interesting part is that crypto trades 24/7.
If investors expect another difficult session for risk assets when U.S. markets reopen, Bitcoin and altcoins can react before the stock market gets the chance.
Tokenized equity prices are not a guaranteed preview of Monday’s official opening prices, either. But seeing Tesla, Nvidia, AMD, Intel and other risk-sensitive assets all trading lower adds to the defensive tone.

Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF Outflows Add More Pressure

Crypto also entered the weekend with another problem: institutional ETF flows were negative.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $228.4 million in combined net outflows from October 12 through October 16.
The week included:

October 12: -$65.4 million

October 13: +$175.7 million

October 14: -$261.4 million

October 15: +$5.1 million

October 16: -$82.4 million

That left the five-session total at roughly -$228.4 million.
Ethereum suffered even heavier ETF selling.
U.S. spot ETH ETFs posted approximately $320.1 million in net outflows over the same five sessions, including $129.5 million on October 14 and another $69.7 million on October 16.
That is meaningful because Bitcoin and Ethereum are already trying to recover from last week’s selloff. Persistent ETF redemptions remove one source of demand at the exact moment broader risk appetite is deteriorating.

Why Today’s Crypto Drop Is Different

The strange part of Sunday’s decline is that crypto may be reacting less to crypto news and more to expectations for markets that are not even open yet.
There are currently three pressures working together: heavy ETF outflows, last week’s collapse in parts of the AI and semiconductor trade, and concern that U.S. stocks could reopen weak on Monday.
Bitcoin near $81,000 is therefore an important area to monitor. Another move below $80,000 would put the recent low back into focus.
Ethereum looks even more vulnerable near $2,376 after losing more than 5% over the past seven days.
Monday’s U.S. session could provide the answer. If equities stabilize, Sunday’s crypto decline may prove to be an early overreaction. If technology stocks extend last week’s losses, crypto traders may simply have started pricing that risk several hours ahead of Wall Street.
