A Canadian who impersonated technology support staff to steal cryptocurrency has been sentenced in Miami after an investigation uncovered luxury purchases, private jet rentals and messages celebrating a multimillion-dollar Bitcoin theft.
Trenton Richard David Johnston, 20, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. Investigators linked him to a scheme that targeted cryptocurrency holders by persuading them to surrender information needed to access their accounts and wallets. Federal prosecutors initially put the operation’s losses above $13 million.
The case illustrates how convincing impersonation can put substantial crypto holdings at risk. According to the reported court documents, the perpetrators obtained access through deception, using the identities of familiar companies to make their requests appear legitimate.
Fake Google Support Calls Led to a 185 BTC Theft
Johnston’s activities reportedly began in January 2024, when he was 17. Investigators said he posed as Google technical support personnel and representatives of cryptocurrency businesses, exploiting victims’ concerns about account security.
One of the largest thefts involved a California resident who lost approximately 185 BTC in March 2026. Those holdings were worth about $13 million at the time. Reporting on the court documents identified Google and hardware wallet company Trezor among the brands impersonated during the operation.
The distinction matters: a person claiming to represent a wallet manufacturer does not necessarily have any connection to that company. Familiar branding and technical language can give criminals credibility before they ask for sensitive information.
The Justice Department’s May announcement described a broader operation in which participants gained access to digital accounts and cryptocurrency wallets, then transferred assets for their own benefit. Investigators said they were continuing to identify additional victims.
The approximately $13 million valuation refers to the Bitcoin’s reported value when stolen, rather than its value at publication.
Luxury Cars and Discord Messages Drew Attention
According to the supplied reporting, Johnston spent proceeds on a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, two BMWs, jewelry, a private jet rental and Miami nightlife.
Federal prosecutors separately alleged that Johnston and co-defendant Brandon Michael Tardibone used more than $1 million in illicit proceeds for vehicles, jewelry and entertainment. The indictment also accused Tardibone of providing accommodation at a luxury Miami-area residence. Those statements described allegations at the indictment stage.
Johnston also left a digital record of his conduct. Messages described in coverage of the criminal complaint showed him celebrating the 185 BTC theft with an accomplice and suggesting further activity would follow.
A witness told investigators that Johnston demonstrated his methods by sharing his screen on Discord. That account adds an unusual detail to the case: others allegedly watched him explain how the thefts worked.
However, the available reporting does not establish that a Discord report initiated the investigation. Claims that he was caught simply because he bragged online compress a more complicated sequence of events.
A Rolls-Royce Traffic Stop Preceded the Criminal Case
Johnston was arrested in March 2026 while sitting in the back of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan in North Miami. Reporting on the case describes a traffic stop that brought officers into contact with him and the vehicle’s other occupants.
Police also reportedly found suspected amphetamine pills in a Hermès bag. Johnston subsequently faced a separate Florida drug possession charge. That proceeding should be distinguished from his federal money-laundering conviction; a charge alone does not establish guilt.
The federal investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from IRS Criminal Investigation, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s inspector general, Customs and Border Protection, and the Golden Beach Police Department.
The Justice Department identified the federal proceedings under case number 26-cr-20181 in the Southern District of Florida.
Johnston Surrendered Approximately $3.8 Million in Crypto
Defense lawyer Brooke C. Watson said Johnston handed over approximately $3.8 million in Bitcoin and Ether after his arrest and admitted his conduct early, according to reporting on a filing submitted before sentencing.
Prosecutors also acknowledged his assistance with investigations involving other people. Coverage of the plea agreement says a separate wire-fraud conspiracy charge was dropped in exchange for his guilty plea to money-laundering conspiracy.
Reports agree that sentencing took place on October 26, but differ on the punishment. Dexerto reported a 25-month prison term, while International Business Times UK and other publications reported time served. Without the sentencing judgment, that discrepancy remains unresolved.
The surrendered cryptocurrency represents only part of the reported losses. Its recovery does not establish that victims have received compensation or that all stolen assets have been located.
Johnston is also expected to face removal to Canada. Reporting indicates that he agreed to an immigration removal order, although the timing of his departure remains unclear.
Why Fake Support Scams Remain a Threat to Crypto Holders
The broader problem extends well beyond this case. The FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report recorded 181,565 complaints involving cryptocurrency, with reported losses exceeding $11 billion. Those figures cover multiple crime categories, rather than support impersonation alone.
For wallet users, the practical lesson is to verify unsolicited security messages independently. Trezor’s official guidance says its support team will never request a wallet backup. It advises users to end suspicious calls and contact the company through official channels. Trezor
A wallet backup can provide access to the associated funds. Sharing it can therefore undermine the protection a hardware wallet provides, even when the physical device remains with its owner. Trezor
Johnston’s case highlights the financial consequences of misplaced trust: a convincing support impersonation can expose holdings accumulated over years, while a subsequent prosecution does not guarantee that victims will recover everything they lost.
