Crypto trading platform Uphold has introduced an inheritance feature for XRP holders using its Uphold Vault service, allowing users to designate a beneficiary who can claim their assets after their death.
The feature gives users a way to plan the transfer of their XRP to the next generation while retaining control of their private keys and keeping their balances private.

Uphold announced the feature in a post on X, encouraging users to prepare for the future by naming a beneficiary directly inside Uphold Vault. The platform explained that users can change or remove their designated beneficiary at any time.
The feature also prevents beneficiaries from accessing the assets prematurely. According to Uphold, a transfer requires an approved claim before the designated beneficiary can receive the assets.
The announcement stated, “Your keys. Your crypto. Your legacy.” Uphold also emphasized that users retain control of their keys and that their balances remain private.

These provisions give XRP holders an additional option for managing their assets beyond their lifetime. Users who hold significant amounts of XRP may want to ensure that their intended recipients can access their holdings without compromising their control during their lifetime.
However, the inheritance feature operates within Uphold Vault’s assisted self-custody model. The company disclosed that users hold two of the three keys required for the service. It also warned that losing both keys can result in the permanent loss of assets.
Uphold further noted that subscriptions renew automatically, making the service’s subscription terms another consideration for users.

The announcement drew responses from users who focused on the relationship between inheritance planning and private-key ownership.
Wagmidotglobal questioned how the feature would work in practice, writing, “Inheritance is the real test of self custody. If you hold your own keys, the sharp question is what the beneficiary actually receives and who can release it, because any answer other than their own key means someone else holds a piece.”
The comment focused on the distinction between retaining control of private keys and establishing a process that allows another person to receive assets after the owner’s death. It also raised questions about who controls the release process and what beneficiaries ultimately receive.
Andrew Wint welcomed inheritance planning for XRP holders but emphasized the importance of independent key control.
“Inheritance planning for XRP is useful. Pure self-custody means you alone control the keys at all times,” Wint wrote. He added that an encrypted recovery guide could help heirs access assets without another party holding or moving them.
Uphold’s new feature addresses a practical concern for cryptocurrency holders. However, users should understand the service’s key-management structure, claim approval requirements, subscription terms and potential risks before relying on it for inheritance planning.
