The investment firm projects Bitcoin’s compound annual return at 10% over the next 10–15 years. Its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions place U.S. large-cap stocks at 7.5%, U.S. real estate investment trusts (REITs) at 8.2%, and gold at 5.5%.
JPMorgan also estimates Bitcoin’s arithmetic annual return at 20.9%, alongside annualized volatility of 55%. The forecast marks the firm’s first attempt to quantify Bitcoin’s long-term return potential.

JPMorgan included Bitcoin in its long-term return assumptions while keeping the cryptocurrency outside its main portfolio allocation calculations. The firm cited Bitcoin’s high volatility and unstable correlations with other assets as reasons for treating it separately.
Compound annual return measures the average yearly growth rate required to reach an investment’s final value over a specified period. By comparison, arithmetic returns represent an average of yearly returns without accounting for compounding.
The distinction matters because Bitcoin’s price swings can produce substantial differences between its average annual return and compounded growth. JPMorgan’s 55% volatility estimate reflects the cryptocurrency’s historically large price fluctuations.
Recent Bitcoin volatility has reportedly declined to around 43%. However, that figure remains below JPMorgan’s modeled assumption and does not eliminate the risk of sharp price movements.
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan highlighted the forecast on X, framing Bitcoin’s inclusion as a sign of changing institutional attitudes. His comments pointed to the significance of a major asset manager formally assessing Bitcoin alongside traditional investments.
Still, JPMorgan’s forecast does not guarantee Bitcoin will outperform stocks or gold. It represents a forward-looking estimate based on the firm’s capital market assumptions.

What JPMorgan’s Bitcoin Forecast Means for Investors

JPMorgan’s broader outlook anticipates stronger economic growth over the next 10–15 years. The firm attributes this outlook partly to a projected $15 trillion global capital expenditure surge, with artificial intelligence driving technology investment and productivity gains.
It forecasts U.S. real GDP growth at 2.1% and developed-market nominal growth at 4.2%. The report also raises its U.S. large-cap equity return forecast to 7.5%, reflecting expected profit margins above 15%.
Against this backdrop, Bitcoin’s 10% projected compound annual return places it above the report’s forecasts for major traditional assets. Yet investors must weigh that potential return against volatility and Bitcoin’s uncertain relationships with other investments.
JPMorgan also warns that rising stock-bond correlations increase the importance of diversification. Its analysis suggests alternative investments could improve portfolio returns and risk-adjusted performance.
For Bitcoin investors, the central distinction is between projected returns and portfolio suitability. JPMorgan has quantified Bitcoin’s potential but has not incorporated it into its main covariance matrices, which measure how asset returns move together.
The forecast therefore signals growing institutional attention without amounting to a recommendation for every portfolio. Bitcoin’s projected return leads the listed assets, but its risk profile remains a critical consideration.
