This is a major outage shaking the financial sector and the crypto ecosystem in Europe. Since Tuesday morning, a critical failure affecting the Google Cloud infrastructure in London has paralyzed a large part of the neobank Revolut’s services. Declined cards, impossible ATM withdrawals, and temporarily unavailable crypto wallets, the fintech is trying to reassure its 45 million users.

The incident began early Tuesday morning, October 20, 2026, following a chain of technical issues in the Google Cloud Europe-West zone. Revolut, which relies almost exclusively on the American giant servers to run its scalable infrastructure, found itself deprived of its central systems.

On social networks and the Downdetector platform, testimonies count in the thousands: refused transactions at checkout, inability to make withdrawals, and inability to access accounts. Other institutions and apps like Lloyds bank or the Emma management app also experience slowdowns due to this server incident.

Revolut: Trading Blocked and Zero Balances, Fear Among Crypto Investors

Beyond daily payments, it is the fintech’s investment side that is heavily impacted by this Google Cloud outage. Users of the dedicated Revolut X platform and clients buying cryptos directly from the main app find themselves unable to execute trading orders.

Some traders expressed fear upon discovering a crypto wallet temporarily drained or unsynchronizable. Revolut quickly clarified the situation on X to prevent panic:

Cloud Centralization: A Systemic Risk for Fintech?

This event brings back to the forefront the crucial debate on the dependency of giants like Revolut and Web3 brokers on centralized cloud servers like Google Cloud or AWS (Amazon). When a single regional data center suffers a network outage, tens of billions of dollars in financial flows and crypto liquidity suddenly freeze.

This incident underscores the importance for crypto investors to keep their bitcoin or other private keys and to use self-custody solutions to avoid being trapped during traditional infrastructure outages.

While Google Cloud and Revolut engineers are working hard to restore connections after this outage, this widespread banking shutdown mainly demonstrates the vulnerability of fully digital banks to cloud outages.
