Bitcoin is opening the third week of October around $82,000, as markets regain some footing after a recent tech-led sell-off in Asia. The bounce in equities, however, isn’t yet translating into broad strength for BTC—support levels are still being tested and investor demand signals are weakening.
On Monday, South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index rose about 1.8% following last week’s downturn. At the same time, traders have scaled back expectations for additional Federal Reserve tightening in 2026. Still, Bitcoin has shown vulnerability: its week closed below a key local support band, while the Coinbase Premium Index slipped to its lowest point since late June.

Asia rebounds as earnings season and tech concerns take center stage

Risk appetite improved early in the week as investors looked toward upcoming corporate earnings and a lighter schedule of US macro data. About 15% of S&P 500 companies were expected to report third-quarter results this week, including SpaceX on Tuesday and Tesla and Meta on Wednesday, according to the report cited in earlier coverage from Cointelegraph.
What matters for crypto traders is not only whether equities stabilize, but why they were pressured in the first place. Cointelegraph previously linked the broader drawdown to weakness that began with South Korean markets, before spreading to other regions.
After KOSPI lost 2.8% on Oct. 12, it slid further to a weekly low of 5,455 on Thursday, leaving the index down roughly 17% on a week-to-date basis at that point. The S&P 500 finished Friday down 2% for the week.
Tech-linked selling also reflected ongoing concerns about the sustainability of AI spending and the debt required to fund it. Cointelegraph noted similar pressure earlier in August via AI-related credit stress. In South Korea, semiconductor competition from China added another strain.

Fed tightening bets cool, but inflation risks remain in focus

Even with equities stabilizing, crypto risk assets remain sensitive to the direction of US monetary policy. Ahead of the Fed’s next decision on Oct. 28, expectations have shifted toward fewer rate hikes.
According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, markets assign 85% odds that rates remain within the current 3.75%–4.00% range in October. Looking further ahead, December is priced with just 11% odds of another pause; instead, traders see a 75% chance of a 25-basis-point hike, while a 50-basis-point move attracts 13% odds.
Cointelegraph also referenced a discussion involving Fed chair Kevin Warsh, where he avoided signaling policy direction. In a statement carried by the IMF’s materials at an annual meeting calendar page published by the IMF, Warsh said he would not “prejudge meetings” or offer guidance on future actions before they occur.
While that lack of forward guidance has been interpreted by markets as somewhat dovish, other commentary emphasized that inflation pressures may prevent meaningful easing. Mosaic Asset Company, cited in the report, argued that a growing inflation problem could keep monetary policy tighter even if the immediate next meeting is expected to hold rates. The firm’s view appeared in an analysis posted on its site.
That inflation debate has more than one driver. Cointelegraph pointed to the September US Producer Price Index (PPI), released last week, showing the largest month-on-month increase since March 2022 at 1.7%, with fuel costs playing a major role. The Bureau of Labor Statistics attributed the rise to gasoline prices, stating that half of the increase in final demand goods could be traced to gasoline, which jumped 20.3%, in the BLS release here.
Fuel was also cited as a significant contributor to the September Consumer Price Index (CPI), which beat expectations by 0.1% to reach 3.7% year-on-year, according to the report and earlier coverage referenced by Cointelegraph at this link.

Bitcoin’s technical picture: support tested, demand signal weak

For BTC, the week’s start is being shaped by technical levels and on-chain demand indicators. Cointelegraph reported that Bitcoin completed a weekly close below a support zone between $82,500 and $82,800, with the weekly close at roughly $82,000. Trader and analyst Rekt Capital warned that such a weekly close could prompt additional retests of the $80,000 area.
In his analysis posted on X here, Rekt Capital suggested that a bearish retest back toward the $82,500 region could set up a possible drop below $80,000 in the following weeks if that retest fails.
There’s also context above current price action. Earlier coverage from Cointelegraph noted that a prior local high near $87,000 is now acting as resistance, including elements such as the 2026 yearly open and a 20-month SMA, in the report here.
On the demand side, CryptoQuant flagged a potential headwind. In its latest market overview, the platform highlighted that US investor demand appears to be softening this month. Specifically, the Coinbase Premium Index fell to -0.141 on Oct. 18, the lowest level since June 30.
CryptoQuant said the reading is “particularly significant” and that if the index remains negative, it could indicate insufficient demand to absorb selling pressure—raising the likelihood of a short-term correction. That interpretation is summarized in the CryptoQuant write-up linked above.
Still, the weakening demand signal contrasts with the broader chart recovery BTC has already made since the end of June. Cointelegraph noted that BTC has held gains since bouncing from multiyear lows under $58,000 on July 1, and this tension—between continued price stabilization and deteriorating demand readings—may be part of why traders are watching $80,000 closely.

What to watch next

With equities attempting to stabilize into a busy earnings week and Fed pricing no longer assuming aggressive additional hikes, the near-term direction for Bitcoin may hinge on whether $80,000 holds and whether demand indicators like the Coinbase Premium Index stay in negative territory. If those signals persist while macro uncertainty remains tied to fuel-driven inflation prints, downside retests could remain a live risk.
