What happened: The overall cryptocurrency market cap dropped by ~2.1% in the past 24 hours, with Bitcoin down over 3% at ~$87,256 and Ethereum slipping ~3.2% to around $2,938. Most assets were lower amid thin year-end holiday liquidity. 88% of crypto assets lost value, though some gainers like ZRX (+22.9%) stood out.
Why it matters: The late-December slump underlines broader risk-off sentiment as traders step aside for the holidays. BTC’s failure to hold above key thresholds and weak breadth mean short-term volatility could persist into 2026.

What happened: Institutional inflows into XRP investment products surged, with recent weekly inflows topping $70 million and monthly totals exceeding $424 million — even as XRP’s price remains subdued.
Why it matters: Strong inflows despite weak price action suggest longer-term capital is accumulating under the surface. If capital continues entering XRP ETFs or products, the supply squeeze could support a future bullish setup.

What happened: Dogecoin has slumped more than 60% in 2025, and analysts warn the meme-coin could face another ~50% drop in 2026 if speculative demand weakens further and no fresh catalysts emerge.
Why it matters: Memecoins often act as risk sentiment gauges — when DOGE underperforms hard digital assets like BTC/ETH, it signals caution and risk aversion among traders. Dogecoin’s dive may foreshadow broader speculative weakness ahead.

What happened: Decentralized perpetual exchange Lighter launched its native token LIT, positioning it as a utility and governance token for its DeFi ecosystem. The project includes revenue-sharing mechanisms and support from leading ecosystem firms.
Why it matters: New utility-oriented DeFi tokens reflect growing interest in decentralized infrastructure beyond speculative assets. Projects with real revenue potential and ecosystem adoption can attract focused capital — a trend that may shape 2026 narratives.
