Internet services giant Cloudflare has confirmed that an internal malfunction, not a cyberattack, caused the outage that briefly disrupted roughly 20% of webpages worldwide, affecting several major crypto platforms.

In a <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://blog.cloudflare.com/18-november-2025-outage/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">post-mortem</a> released on Tuesday, the company explained that a “feature file” in its Bot Management System unexpectedly exceeded its intended capacity. The bloated file triggered a cascading software failure, disrupting content delivery across the ecosystem.
Cloudflare, which routes around one-fifth of global internet traffic and supports nearly a third of the top 10,000 websites, apologized for the disruption.
<blockquote>
 “Any outage of any of our systems is unacceptable,”
</blockquote>
 it said, acknowledging the scale of its role in keeping the internet running.
<h3 id="span-style-font-weight-400-crypto-platforms-among-those-hit-span">Crypto platforms among those hit</h3>
The sudden blackout brought down the websites and services of Coinbase, Blockchain.com, BitMEX, Ledger, Toncoin, Arbiscan, DefiLlama, and even platforms like X and ChatGPT.
The incident quickly reignited long-standing concerns about the crypto sector’s heavy reliance on centralized web infrastructure, especially coming just weeks after a major Amazon Web Services <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://defi-planet.com/2025/10/global-aws-outage-disrupts-coinbase-robinhood-and-major-online-platforms/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">outage</a> that caused similar disruptions.
A representative from EthStorage, which builds decentralized hosting tools for Ethereum, <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://x.com/EthStorage/status/1990791772969316675?t=Gc6PA8sowUfq5iAoIC3iiA&amp;s=19" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> that the repeated failures highlight one core issue:
<blockquote>
 “centralized infrastructure is fragile and carries significant single points of failure. Advancing truly decentralized internet applications remains the core value of Web3, which we firmly believe in.”
</blockquote>
<h3 id="span-style-font-weight-400-calls-for-decentralized-web-stack-grow-louder-span">Calls for decentralized web stack grow louder</h3>
The outage arrives on the heels of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s recently published “Trustless Manifesto,” which urges developers to keep decentralization at the centre of blockchain development.
Buterin, alongside Ethereum Foundation researchers Yoav Weiss and Marissa Posner, warned that trustlessness is often compromised the moment projects adopt hosted nodes, centralized relayers or external APIs. Each small concession, they argued, eventually becomes a potential chokepoint.
With both AWS and Cloudflare experiencing back-to-back disruptions, the push for a fully decentralized web stack is gaining renewed urgency among industry builders and infrastructure providers.
