Within the XRP community, informal ranking systems have emerged as a way for holders to identify their position based on token holdings.
A recent post by crypto enthusiast XRP Update revisited one of these commonly shared ladders, categorizing holders from “worms” with a single token to “big whales” holding 100,000 XRP or more.
While intended as a light-hearted measure of commitment within the ecosystem, the post prompted responses that reflected deeper views about what such rankings truly represent.

The ranking chart displayed various classifications tied to specific XRP amounts, assigning sea creature titles to different holding brackets. From 100 XRP for a “shrimp” to over 100,000 XRP for a “big whale,” the ladder serves as a symbolic representation of individual accumulation goals.
For many, identifying with a tier has become a motivational tool, encouraging <a href="https://timestabloid.com/analyst-reveals-hardest-part-of-holding-xrp/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">long-term holding</a> and a sense of belonging within the wider <a href="https://timestabloid.com/xrp-to-1000-by-2030-community-responds/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP community.</a>
<h2 id="b-sustainability-of-status-b">Sustainability of Status</h2>
One user, identified as MB, pointed out that the central challenge is not reaching a particular tier, but maintaining it. They <a href="https://x.com/bgm2021/status/1979900621902713087?s=46" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">questioned</a> whether holders have accumulated enough XRP to remain within their chosen bracket even after taking profits in a future market cycle.
This perspective brought about a key distinction between short-term accumulation and strategic, sustainable positioning. It suggested that true commitment is tested during market volatility, when many are tempted to liquidate large portions of their holdings.
The comment captured a common sentiment among experienced holders: ranking oneself today may differ significantly from maintaining that status through the next major price surge.

<h2 id="b-debate-over-definition-of-a-whale-b">Debate Over Definition of a “Whale”</h2>
Another community member, Michaela G, <a href="https://x.com/1michaelagraham/status/1980100335432544752?s=46" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">offered</a> a more critical viewpoint by challenging the criteria used in these rankings. They argued that traditional definitions of a “whale” are based not merely on holdings, but on the ability to materially impact market price through large trades.
In their view, assigning the title of “whale” to anyone holding 100,000 XRP risks diluting the term and turning it into an inclusive label rather than a reflection of true market influence.
<h2 id="b-community-identity-versus-market-reality-b">Community Identity Versus Market Reality</h2>
The post by XRP Update underscores how cultural elements within crypto communities can evolve independently of financial definitions. For many participants, these rankings are less about literal market power and more about personal milestones and shared identity. Yet, the responses also show a divide between those who view holding thresholds as light-hearted markers and those who believe such classifications should reflect economic impact.
As <a href="https://timestabloid.com/xrp-cannot-be-mined-price-will-increase-significantly-heres-why/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP</a> continues to attract <a href="https://timestabloid.com/saudi-prince-we-are-long-term-xrp-holders/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">long-term participants, </a>informal systems like these will likely persist, not as financial metrics, but as cultural expressions within the ecosystem. The ongoing discussion around them reveals not just the diversity of holdings but the diversity of perspectives that shape the XRP community.
