The FBI has formally attributed a $6 billion hack of Binance to North Korean state-sponsored actors and is urging decentralized finance protocols, exchanges, and wallet services to block a set of identified Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana addresses linked to the theft, according to a public service announcement published through the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

FBI attributes the $6 billion Binance hack to North Korea

The bureau published the formal attribution via IC3, the federal government's primary channel for cybercrime public alerts, lending official weight to what had previously circulated as industry speculation. The announcement names North Korea as the responsible party and places the total value of stolen assets at $6 billion.
Binance is the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, and a breach at this scale ranks among the most consequential in the history of digital assets. Binance's founder had earlier acknowledged the exchange appeared to have been deliberately targeted before the full scope of the incident became clear.

The FBI's attribution follows a documented pattern of North Korean cyber units conducting large-scale crypto heists to generate hard currency for the regime. State attribution from U.S. law enforcement carries significance for compliance teams globally, as it can trigger sanctions screening obligations across jurisdictions including those in Southeast Asia.

DeFi community asked to block flagged BTC, ETH, and SOL addresses

Beyond attribution, the advisory includes a direct operational request: decentralized finance platforms, centralized exchanges, and on-chain service providers are asked to block transactions involving addresses the bureau has identified as linked to the stolen funds.

The three blockchain networks named in the request are Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL), covering the most liquid settlement layers in the current market. The breadth of the request signals that investigators believe proceeds from the hack have already been distributed or are being moved across multiple chains to obscure their origin.

For Southeast Asian exchanges and DeFi participants operating in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, the request creates a practical compliance question: how quickly can address blacklists be updated, and what liability attaches to processing a transaction flagged in a U.S. federal advisory? Regional regulators in Bangkok and Manila have moved steadily toward aligning local virtual asset rules with FATF standards, which means IC3 advisories increasingly carry indirect regulatory weight even outside U.S. jurisdiction.

The Binance hack and its downstream effects have already drawn scrutiny from Thai financial authorities, with regulators examining the incident's implications for locally licensed platforms. That scrutiny is likely to intensify now that the FBI has issued a formal attribution and a concrete list of addresses to block.

What the FBI is asking and which networks are named

The advisory asks DeFi protocols, bridges, and exchanges to screen transactions against the identified addresses and refuse to process funds that originate from them. This type of request, directed at private-sector crypto infrastructure rather than law enforcement counterparts, reflects a shift in how U.S. agencies approach crypto asset recovery: the focus moves to choking liquidity before conversion occurs.

Bitcoin addresses implicated in the advisory are traceable on public ledgers, and blockchain analytics firms are expected to incorporate the flagged addresses into real-time screening feeds rapidly. Ethereum's programmable layer creates additional complexity, as funds routed through smart contracts or wrapped token protocols can obscure provenance in ways that straight BTC transfers cannot.

Solana's inclusion is notable given the network's growing role in high-frequency DeFi activity and its rising adoption in Southeast Asian retail markets. Platforms catering to Filipino and Indonesian users with SOL-based products will need to verify their compliance tooling covers the flagged addresses. The Binance hack has already contributed to broader market volatility, and a formal FBI attribution tied to North Korea adds a geopolitical dimension that may factor into institutional risk assessments across the region.

Nasdaq-listed companies have also registered exposure to the event, with at least one firm reported to be considering selling $450 million in Bitcoin amid concerns stemming from the hack.

TLDR Keypoints

The FBI has officially attributed the Binance hack to North Korean state-sponsored actors, publishing the attribution through the IC3 public advisory system.

The value of assets taken in the breach is reported at $6 billion, placing Binance at the center of a major federal cybercrime investigation.

The bureau is asking DeFi protocols, exchanges, and wallet providers to block identified Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana addresses linked to the stolen funds, with Southeast Asian platforms facing indirect compliance pressure as regional regulators align more closely with FATF and U.S. enforcement standards.
