Chainlink

Wednesday

On October 26, 2026 Chainlink presented a product called CustodySync. It is meant to make crypto holdings that sit with a qualified custodian usable as collateral for loans in DeFi markets, without the coins leaving the custodian. The launch partner is Anchorage Digital Bank. The price of Chainlink stood at $11.86 on Wednesday morning, around 5 percent above the previous day.

For you as a retail investor, CustodySync is not a product you can sign up for. It is aimed at institutions. It is interesting all the same, because it touches the question of what the LINK token is needed for, and because it bears on three points that apply to small portfolios too: who holds the keys, what happens when collateral is realised, and how a loan against crypto holdings is treated for tax.

Chainlink CustodySync at a glance: custodied holdings become loan collateral

A DeFi lending market is a program on a blockchain that collects deposits and lends them out against collateral, without a bank on the other side. A custodian, by contrast, safeguards the private keys for its clients, and "qualified" in this context means it holds a licence from a supervisory authority for doing so. Between these two worlds there was a gap: anyone whose holdings sat with a qualified custodian could not post them as collateral in a lending market without first taking them out.

That gap is exactly what CustodySync addresses, according to the details in Chainlink's product announcement. The holding stays with the custodian. In the lending market it appears as a representation, and the entries flow back into the custodian's books. Chainlink describes the process in five steps, and each of them answers a question a risk officer would ask.

The five steps Chainlink describes

First an institution posts its collateral with the custodian. The custodied holding is written to the blockchain via Chainlink Proof of Reserve. Proof of Reserve is a Chainlink service that publishes holdings attestations as a data point on-chain, so that a program can read them. A receipt token is then posted in the lending market, representing the custodied holding there.

In the third step the loan flows from the lending market to the borrower in a single transaction. Repayments and accruing interest are, according to Chainlink, recorded automatically in the custodian's records. The fourth step governs the price, the fifth the realisation of collateral. Both are the real core of the matter, and both follow below in sections of their own.

Proof of Reserve: the custodied holding appears on-chain

On-chain means that a piece of information sits in the blockchain itself and can be read there by any program. Off-chain means it sits in a company's systems. Custody is traditionally organised off-chain, the lending market is on-chain. Without a bridge, a lending market cannot know whether anything is actually held at a custodian.

Proof of Reserve builds that bridge in one direction. The custodian publishes what it holds, and the lending market can build on that instead of trusting the custodian by contract. That is the difference between an assurance and a data point a program queries itself. Chainlink states that across all its products it secures values in the tens of billions in 70 percent of all DeFi markets.

The receipt token: transfer restricted, usable only in the lending market

The receipt token is the most delicate part of the construction, because a freely tradable token on custodied holdings would be a second claim on the same thing. Chainlink therefore describes it as transfer-restricted: it represents the custodied values in the lending market and conveys no claim on the holdings outside that link.

In practice that means nobody can resell the token and thereby put a claim on someone else's custodied coins into circulation. The collateral stays tied to the one lending market it was posted for. Whether that holds up in practice depends on how closely custodian and lending market actually keep their books.

Anchorage Digital as launch partner and appointed collateral agent

Chainlink names Anchorage Digital Bank as the official launch partner and describes it as the first federally chartered bank for digital assets in the United States. Its custody infrastructure and its Atlas Collateral Management product work together with the lending protocols, and Anchorage acts as the collateral agent appointed by those protocols.

A collateral agent is the party appointed to realise collateral when a loan breaches an agreed threshold. That this role sits with the custodian itself is the actual novelty: in an ordinary DeFi lending market the realisation is carried out by any third party, which receives a premium for it.

Nathan McCauley, chief executive and co-founder of Anchorage Digital, is quoted in the announcement with a sentence that sums up the intention behind the product: "Institutions should not have to choose between qualified custody and on-chain liquidity." That is the partner stating a position, not a statement about demand. Chainlink gives no figures on loan volume and no firm commitments from lenders at launch.

One price for both sides: Data Feeds on-chain, Data Streams at the custodian

The fourth step is the one on which constructions like this have failed in the past. A loan against collateral needs one number: the ratio of the loan amount to the value of the collateral, known in the trade as loan to value, or LTV. If two parties calculate that number from different price sources, they arrive at different results, and then they argue at precisely the moment when speed matters.

CustodySync puts both sides on the same data basis. The lending market reads Chainlink Data Feeds, that is, price data that sits on-chain. The same values are delivered by Chainlink Data Streams into the custodian's off-chain systems. Both sides therefore calculate the same LTV from the same figures. It sounds unspectacular and it is the reason the product can work at all.

Chainlink Runtime Environment: loan entries flow back into the custody books

Behind the reconciliation sits the Chainlink Runtime Environment, CRE for short. It is the runtime that automates processes between separate systems. Here it writes the loan movements back into the custodian's records, so that its books reflect the state of the loan without anyone entering it by hand.

For an institution this is the point that decides an approval. A custody operation whose books do not match the actual position gets no sign-off from its own audit function, however convincing the technology behind it may be.

$700 billion in custody, $30 billion in outstanding DeFi loans

Chainlink justifies the product with an order of magnitude. According to the figures in the announcement, around $700 billion in digital assets sits in custody. That is less than 0.5 percent of the roughly $250 trillion held in custody traditionally. On the other side, the DeFi lending market holds more than $80 billion in deposits and more than $30 billion in outstanding loans.

The calculation behind it is simple: part of the custodied holdings lies idle, and a lending market of this size could absorb it. Whether that happens is another question. Coverage of the launch points out that uptake depends on how many further custodians and lending protocols join in, and that security and operational risks remain.

What is notable is the figure Chainlink does not give. There is no indication of how much has actually been borrowed through CustodySync. At launch that is usual. But it also means the $700 billion is a description of a market and not a pipeline.

LINK at $11.86: up 5.1 percent in 24 hours, 77 percent below the 2021 high

The LINK token stood at $11.86 on Wednesday morning. That is 5.1 percent more than 24 hours earlier, and it is also the high of the day; the low of the day was $11.22. Over a week it is down 4.0 percent, over a month down 13.4 percent. Market value comes to $9.10 billion, which corresponds to rank 16 among all crypto assets. In circulation are 766.8 million of the 1 billion LINK in total.

The distance to the all-time high remains large. The high of $52.70 dates from May 9, 2021, and the current price is 77.5 percent below it. All these values come from CoinGecko as of Wednesday morning. At other providers they differ slightly: reports from October 26 quote prices around $11.48, and depending on the moment of measurement the daily change lies between a good 3 and a good 5 percent. The range is part of the picture, because every exchange has its own price.

A price gain on the day after a product announcement is no proof of a connection. The market as a whole also recovered on Wednesday morning, and the move in LINK sits within the range several of the top 25 assets showed that day. Anyone attributing the price to CustodySync alone is telling a story the data does not support.

What an infrastructure product means for demand for the token

The honest answer is that this cannot be derived from the announcement. In its description of CustodySync, Chainlink names no fee payable in LINK, and no mechanism that takes tokens out of circulation. The link between use of the services and the token is a question of fee models, not of the product name. Anyone claiming more here than the source states is selling a guess as a fact.

What can be documented is the character of the step. Chainlink continues to build products for institutional clients. In October alone it added a collaboration with an asset manager on a platform for meeting regulatory requirements in the Abu Dhabi financial centre, which Chainlink announced in its press section on October 27.

Liquidation through the collateral agent: a forced sale is still a sale

The liquidation threshold is the point at which the value of the collateral has fallen so far that the loan is no longer sufficiently covered. In an ordinary DeFi market the collateral is then sold immediately and automatically. Under CustodySync, according to Chainlink's description, the appointed collateral agent sells in its own procedure, and the product records the committed sale proceeds on-chain so that the position stays stable while the sale is settled. Final settlement takes place in a single transaction.

For institutions that is an advantage, because an orderly sale through a custodian can achieve better prices than an automatic realisation by the second. But it also shifts responsibility. A party that holds, values and realises combines three roles that are often kept apart in traditional finance.

Holding period and the exemption threshold: what a loan against crypto triggers in Germany

For you the point becomes practically relevant as soon as you consider a loan against your own crypto holdings, for instance through a lending platform. Under German income tax law, the gain from selling crypto assets is a private disposal transaction and taxable if less than a year lies between purchase and sale. After a year of holding, it stays tax-free. For gains from private disposal transactions an exemption threshold of 1,000 euros a year applies.

A loan itself is not a sale. The realisation of collateral, however, is one, and it takes place at a moment you do not choose. If your collateral is realised within the one-year period, a taxable event arises even though you did not sell. Whether posting the coins as collateral already counts as a disposal for tax depends on whether ownership of the coins passes; that question is settled for your case by a tax adviser. An overview of tools that document such events is in our comparison of crypto tax software and portfolio trackers.

MiCA and custody: CustodySync is not intended for retail investors in the EU

MiCA is the EU regulation on markets in crypto assets. Among other things it governs who may hold and trade crypto assets for clients in the European Union, and it requires a licence for that. CustodySync is aimed at institutional clients of a US custodian. It is therefore not an offering you can access as a retail investor in the EU, and that does not change because the LINK token is available on European trading venues.

What you can take away from the episode is the test question behind it. It is the same with every provider: who holds the keys, and under whose supervision does that party stand? With a provider that accepts clients in the EU, the MiCA licence belongs to the details you should look up before your first deposit. Anyone who wants to hold the keys themselves cannot avoid a hardware wallet, and anyone looking for interest on holdings compares the terms of providers in our crypto lending comparison before handing coins out of their own custody.

Staking, lending and self-custody: three routes open to retail investors

With CustodySync, institutions get a fourth route: a loan against custodied holdings. For you the familiar three remain, and they differ above all in risk, not in return.

Self-custody means you hold the keys yourself. The risk then lies entirely with you, with your backup and with your care. There is no provider that can fail, and there is also nobody to help you if the backup is missing.

With staking you commit coins to a process that secures a network, and receive a share in return. Your holding normally stays subject to your control, though depending on the provider with a waiting period on withdrawal. With lending you lend coins for interest to a provider or into a lending market. Here you additionally carry the risk that the borrower or the program fails, and it is precisely this risk that CustodySync aims to reduce for institutions by keeping the holding with the custodian.

The order of the questions stays the same in all three cases: who has access, what happens in the event of loss, and what amount is affected in the worst case. Only then comes the interest rate.

Chainlink CustodySync: without further custodians it remains a pilot

At launch there is one custodian behind the product, and Chainlink names no loan volume. CustodySync is therefore today a construction with one partner, whose viability will show in whether further custodians and lending protocols follow. Three steps can be drawn from it for you:

For your own holdings, check first who holds the keys. If you want to hold them yourself, compare the devices and their backup procedures in our hardware wallet comparison.

If you want to earn interest on holdings, read the terms on waiting periods and default risk before you hand coins over. The providers' conditions are in our overview of staking platforms.

If you want to build or reduce a position in LINK, compare the fees and the licences of the trading venues among the best crypto exchanges, and note down the purchase date for the one-year period.
