A debate over Dogecoin‘s lack of on-chain development surfaced on X after a DogeOS executive claimed the network has significantly fewer active builders compared to similar large-cap cryptocurrencies. The remarks ignited responses from prominent community members, including core developers and long-time supporters.

Debate over Dogecoin’s evolving purpose

The discussion began when BuidrJ, chief strategy officer at DogeOS, a company focused on Dogecoin ecosystem software, argued that despite more than 10 million holders, Dogecoin lacks developer activity and utility compared with its peers. BuidrJ suggested that very few projects are being built on top of Dogecoin relative to the network’s size.

This assertion prompted pushback from members of the Dogecoin community. Chromia X, a core Dogecoin developer, responded by pointing out that such a statement dismisses the ongoing work by contributors: “It does to me if you’re erasing the work I’ve done,” Chromia X stated in reply.

Vitalik Buterin’s and Billy Markus’s perspectives

Billy Markus, one of the co-creators of Dogecoin, developed the initial Dogecoin Core releases and later stepped away from active development in 2014 along with Jackson Palmer. Since then, a new group of maintainers and contributors has continued to support Dogecoin’s core software and user-facing features.

Supporters, such as Mishaboar, argued that Dogecoin was designed to function primarily as a simple and open digital currency rather than a platform for complex financial applications. “DOGE Was Never Meant to Be Ethereum or Solana,” Mishaboar wrote, emphasizing Dogecoin’s identity as a permissionless, decentralized currency.

Comparison with DeFi activity on other chains

BuidrJ highlighted the disparity in Dogecoin’s on-chain activity compared with networks like Ethereum and Solana. Specifically, he noted that Dogecoin’s market capitalization stands at $12.3 billion, with only about $11 million used in decentralized finance (DeFi), representing less than 0.1% of its total valuation.

By contrast, Ethereum boasts a $46.4 billion total value locked (TVL) in DeFi protocols, equal to roughly 16% of its market cap, while Solana has $5.7 billion in DeFi, or about 10% of its total market value.

BuidrJ described this as a “100x gap” between Dogecoin and other major networks, arguing, “we are 100x behind other blue chips.” He further stated, “It’s not that DOGE holders don’t want to deploy on chain, it’s that DOGE has never had on-chain utility that reinforces TVL growth. That’s reflected in the price of all 3 assets.”

Dogecoin’s share of DeFi is under 0.1% of its market cap, compared to 16% for Ethereum and 10% for Solana, forming what DogeOS’s CSO calls “a 100x gap.”

Community response: Simplicity over complex DeFi

Mishaboar, a well-known Dogecoin supporter, challenged the focus on DeFi and TVL as measures of success. He emphasized that defining Dogecoin’s value by DeFi capital overlooks its original purpose and introduces unnecessary risks for users.

Dogecoin’s simplicity is cited as one of its greatest strengths, attracting users who prefer a straightforward, permissionless digital currency experience.

He further noted that Dogecoin offers a distinct value proposition by functioning as a decentralized, easy-to-use currency. According to Mishaboar, locking DOGE in DeFi protocols does not inherently increase its usefulness or appeal to average users.

“Also, TVL is certainly not a measure of how good a currency is,” Mishaboar stated, arguing that Dogecoin’s utility should be evaluated in terms of accessibility and freedom from additional risks, rather than the volume of assets committed to DeFi protocols.
