Alpenglow vs Fusaka looks like a contest, but it is not one. Alpenglow is Solana’s new way of reaching agreement on every block. Fusaka is Ethereum’s upgrade for handling far more rollup data. One chain went after faster settlement.
The other went after room to grow. Fusaka went live on December 3, 2025. Alpenglow reached the Solana mainnet on October 21, 2026.
The sections below start with Alpenglow, move to Fusaka, and then compare the two. Beginners still learningWeb3 basics can follow along, since each term is explained the first time it appears.

What Is Solana’s Alpenglow Upgrade and What Problem Does It Fix?

Alpenglow is Solana’s new consensus protocol. Consensus is how thousands of validators agree on the order of transactions. Finality is the moment a transaction can no longer be reversed.
Under the old TowerBFT system, finality took about 12.8 seconds. The officialSolana Alpenglow upgrade page sets a new target of roughly 150 milliseconds. That is a target, not a promise for every transaction.
The rollout comes in two phases. Voter, the voting layer, has been live since epoch 1064. Rotor, a later change to how blocks spread across the network, has no date yet. Execution stays the same, so programs and fees are untouched.

How Do Votor Votes and Certificates Speed Up Solana Finality?

Think of validators as a committee that votes on each block. Under Votor, they send votes straight to each other. Those votes get bundled into certificates, which are short proofs that enough stake is agreed.
A block can finish in one round if 80% of the stake votes yes. If it falls short, a second round uses 60% thresholds. The project says this Solana consensus design tolerates 20% malicious stake plus 20% offline stake.
Votes are no longer transactions inside blocks. That is why block transaction counts can look lower after the switch. It reflects how votes are counted, not necessarily less activity.
What Is Ethereum’s Fusaka Upgrade and Why Did It Go Live in 2025?

Fusaka is Ethereum’s scaling upgrade. It pairs the Osaka execution upgrade with the Fulu consensus upgrade. The officialEthereum Fusaka upgrade page names PeerDAS as the main feature.
Smaller changes include a cap of 16,777,216 gas per transaction and a 60 million default block gas limit.
Support for passkey-style wallet signatures also arrived. The core goal is simple: give Layer 2 networks more space without making nodes too heavy to run.

How Does PeerDAS Help Ethereum Scaling for Layer 2 Networks?

Layer 2 networks send their data to Ethereum in blobs, which are temporary data packages. Before Fusaka, every full node stored every blob. That became harder as usage grew.
PeerDAS changes this with data availability sampling. Each node checks small pieces to confirm the data exists. A full node holds about 1/8 of blob data, and missing parts can be rebuilt from 50% of the whole.
In theory, that allows up to 8x more blob space. In practice, capacity rises step by step through blob parameter-only forks that lift limits between major upgrades.

For most people on the Solana blockchain, the apps look and work the same. Wallets open as usual, and nothing needs to be updated by hand.
The difference sits behind the screen, where a swap or payment may settle quicker than before, though the speed will not be identical every time. Traders in theSolana DeFi ecosystem are the likeliest to notice it first, since their trades depend on fast confirmation. Ethereum holders need to do nothing.
Messages that offer to upgrade ETH are scams, and the official page says so. Layer 1 gas fees do not fall directly. Layer 2 costs depend on blob capacity, demand, and each rollup’s pricing. For the basics ofEthereum gas fees, a separate explainer helps.

What Should Developers and Validators Know About the Changes?

As of October 27, 2026, Solana validators need the supported 4.3.2 client. They also need at least 0.8 SOL above the rent-exempt minimum in the vote account, which pays a flat per-epoch fee that is burned.
Those new to the token can checkhow to buy Solana. Operators should recheck the official page before acting. Developers who stream block data should store events by slot and block candidate, since one slot can hold more than one. On Ethereum, node operators needed updated clients.
For regular full nodes, the official page estimates blob storage and download needs could drop around 80%. Solo stakers who build blocks locally need more upload bandwidth. For validation on Ethereum, seehow to stake Ethereum.

Expert Take: What Do the Numbers Say About These Two Upgrades?

Solana’s case rests on design. The 150 ms number is the project’s own target, and it depends on how the stake is spread. Independent measurements will show how close it gets. Rotor is the open question, since it has no schedule.
Ethereum’s case rests on lighter nodes. The trade-off is that higher blob targets will demand more bandwidth later. Three numbers will settle most doubts: measured finality times, blob usage, and validator participation.

What Risks and Trade-Offs Come With Faster Finality and Scale?

Like most crypto network upgrades, both carry trade-offs. Alpenglow changes core consensus, so validators took on migration duties.
A validator that cannot pay the fee skips voting and block production for the next epoch.
Block timestamps now come from each block’s leader instead of a median of validator votes. That slightly shifts trust for programs that read time.
Fusaka gains land mainly on Layer 2. Neither upgrade promises price moves for SOL or ETH.

Conclusion: Two Upgrades, Two Different Ways to Scale a Network

Alpenglow vs Fusaka shows two ways to improve a blockchain. Solana tightened its base consensus to finish transactions faster.
Ethereum widened the data room so rollups can grow. Still unclear is how Rotor and later blob increases will perform day to day. Ethereum’s next step is covered in aGlamsterdam Ethereum upgrade explainer.

Crypto prices can swing fast, and an upgrade says nothing about where SOL or ETH will trade next.
