Token Terminal reports a 560.8% increase in DeFi stablecoin deposits over three years, with lending platforms capturing most of the tracked capital.

Aave and Morpho dominate the market through different lending architectures, creating distinct liquidity and collateral risks.

Coinbase’s Morpho-powered lending products and independent vault curators are expanding DeFi distribution beyond traditional crypto applications.

Stablecoin deposits across decentralized finance have reached $24 billion, equivalent to approximately 8% of the broader $298.4 billion stablecoin market, according to data shared by Token Terminal in X on October 25.

The expansion is increasingly concentrated in lending infrastructure. Aave remains the largest individual venue, while Morpho Blue has gained a substantial position through isolated lending markets, independently managed vaults and integrations with consumer-facing financial applications.

The competition extends beyond deposit volumes. Aave’s pooled-liquidity approach and Morpho’s configurable credit markets give lenders different ways to manage collateral exposure, borrowing demand and withdrawal liquidity.

Coinbase’s adoption of Morpho infrastructure illustrates how decentralized lending can reach customers who never interact directly with a DeFi protocol.

Aave and Morpho Dominate Stablecoin Lending

Token Terminal’s dataset covers 41 DeFi venues, 31 blockchains and 193 stablecoin assets.

Aave V3 and Morpho Blue together account for 67.7% of the tracked deposits, demonstrating how strongly liquidity has concentrated around the two lending ecosystems.

Aave organizes lending through protocol-managed liquidity pools, with collateral requirements, supply limits and borrowing parameters established through its governance and risk framework.

Morpho Blue uses isolated markets. Each market defines its own collateral asset, loan asset, oracle and liquidation parameters, allowing credit markets with different risk profiles to operate separately.

Isolation limits how losses in one market propagate to unrelated markets. It does not eliminate shared exposure when a vault allocates funds across several markets or when those markets depend on the same collateral assets and price oracles.

The difference is especially relevant when collateral prices fall rapidly and liquidations must be executed under stressed market conditions.

Morpho’s Curators Bring Portfolio Management to DeFi

Morpho Vaults introduce an additional layer between depositors and individual lending markets.

Independent curators select markets, set allocation limits and manage the deployment of supplied capital. Established participants include Steakhouse Financial, Gauntlet and Sentora, whose activity can be examined through Morpho’s curator dashboard.

This structure allows different vaults to offer distinct lending strategies despite accepting the same stablecoin.

A conservative USDC vault might emphasize highly liquid Bitcoin and Ether collateral. Another could allocate capital toward less liquid or more complex collateral in pursuit of higher borrowing yields.

The difference can become significant during liquidations.

If collateral values decline, a market needs sufficient liquidation incentives and external liquidity for positions to be closed without creating bad debt. An isolated market limits direct exposure to its own parameters, but a vault allocating funds to that market still bears its share of any losses.

Curator quality therefore matters alongside smart-contract security.

Morpho’s official documentation outlines the role of curators in selecting lending markets and managing risk.

Coinbase Makes Morpho Lending Accessible Beyond DeFi

One of Morpho’s most important distribution channels is Coinbase.

The exchange uses Morpho-powered lending infrastructure on Base to offer eligible customers cryptocurrency-backed borrowing.

Customers can borrow USDC against supported collateral without directly navigating Morpho’s interface. For Bitcoin-backed borrowing, the collateral is represented onchain through Coinbase Wrapped Bitcoin.

Coinbase also offers eligible customers access to USDC lending strategies built on Morpho infrastructure, distinguishing between Prime and High-Yield vaults.

The categories serve different risk preferences. Prime strategies emphasize established collateral, while higher-yield approaches can involve broader market exposures and token incentives.

These integrations matter because they change how lending products reach customers.

Rather than requiring users to discover a protocol independently, Coinbase incorporates onchain lending into an existing financial platform. Morpho supplies the underlying credit infrastructure, while the customer interacts with Coinbase’s product.

This provides a credible explanation for part of Morpho’s commercial momentum, although Token Terminal’s aggregate figures do not establish the amount of deposits attributable specifically to Coinbase.

The arrangement also introduces additional considerations around frontend access, eligibility and the terms governing Coinbase’s services, separate from the underlying smart contracts.

USDC Leads Deposits, but APY Alone Is a Poor Comparison

USDC represents 38.2% of the tracked stablecoin deposits, ahead of USDT at 20.3% and Ethena’s USDe at 9.0%.

The asset composition reflects the importance of dollar-denominated liquidity in collateralized lending.

Borrowers can access stablecoins without selling their underlying cryptocurrency, while suppliers receive interest generated by borrowing demand.

Yet two USDC lending products can offer substantially different economic exposures.

Aave’s supplier rates depend on utilization and protocol parameters. Morpho vault returns depend on underlying market rates, curator allocations, fees and, where applicable, incentive distributions.

An advertised APY may combine borrower interest with temporary token rewards. Those rewards can disappear even when the underlying lending market remains active.

USDe introduces a separate risk profile. Ethena’s synthetic-dollar structure relies on collateral and hedging arrangements, making funding conditions and market liquidity relevant to its stability.

A negative derivatives funding environment can increase hedging costs. The effect on a DeFi lending position depends on whether USDe is supplied directly, used as collateral or incorporated into a leveraged strategy.

The reported asset share alone cannot quantify those exposures.

What Depositors Should Check Before Choosing a Vault

The most useful comparison between Aave and Morpho is not which platform displays the highest yield at a particular moment.

It is whether the additional return compensates for the liquidity and collateral risks involved.

Four variables provide a practical starting point:

Available Liquidity: How much capital can be withdrawn immediately without waiting for borrower repayments?

Collateral Exposure: Which assets ultimately secure the underlying loans?

Yield Composition: How much of the advertised APY comes from borrower interest rather than temporary token incentives?

Risk Management: Who controls collateral limits, oracle selection and market allocations?

Morpho’s vault interface provides information on deposits, liquidity, curators and market allocations. Aave publishes market-level borrowing and supply data through its application.

Consider a vault with $100 million in deposits but only $20 million immediately available for withdrawal.

That does not necessarily indicate insolvency. The remaining assets may be lent to borrowers. However, large withdrawals could require repayments or additional liquidity before all requests can be fulfilled.

This illustrates why total value locked cannot be treated as immediately redeemable cash.

Without synchronized market-level data on rates, utilization and collateral exposure, neither platform can be identified as offering the better risk-adjusted USDC yield.

Ethereum Retains Its Lead as Lending Expands Across Chains

Ethereum accounts for 55.2% of the tracked deposits, followed by Base at 13.6% and Solana at 6.5%.

Ethereum benefits from established lending markets and deep collateral liquidity. Lower-cost networks support smaller transactions and make lending products easier to integrate into consumer-facing applications.

These figures describe where stablecoins are deployed, not where all stablecoin transactions occur.

Determining whether the reported deposit balance represents an all-time high requires historical data with consistent protocol coverage and methodology, a caveat often overlooked in headline TVL comparisons.

For lending markets, the more revealing indicators are borrowing utilization, realized yields and the quality of collateral supporting outstanding loans.

Morpho’s expansion demonstrates the appeal of customizable credit infrastructure and third-party distribution. Aave’s scale shows the continuing importance of established liquidity pools.

The decisive measure will be how effectively each model handles withdrawals, liquidations and financing demand when cryptocurrency markets become less favorable.
