The exchange has closed order books for a batch of assets while giving holders a separate window to move funds off the platform.

Kraken has ended trading for 13 tokens on its platform, according to reports from NewsBTC and The Cryptonomist. The move closes order books for the affected assets, meaning users can no longer buy or sell them through the exchange.

Alongside the trading halt, Kraken has opened a separate withdrawal window. Holders of the delisted tokens have until January 29 to move their funds off the exchange. This two-stage process, first ending trading, then setting a later withdrawal cutoff, is a standard approach exchanges use when removing assets from their platforms.

Exchanges periodically review the tokens they list, weighing factors such as trading volume, liquidity, regulatory risk, and project activity. When a token no longer meets internal standards, exchanges typically announce a delisting in phases. Trading access ends first, giving users time to exit positions. A later deadline then forces withdrawal of remaining balances before custody support is fully discontinued.

The gap between the trading halt and the withdrawal deadline matters for token holders. It gives them a window to transfer assets to personal wallets or to other platforms that continue to support the tokens. Missing the January 29 cutoff could leave funds stranded or require direct intervention with Kraken's support team to recover them.

Delistings of this kind are routine in the cryptocurrency industry and do not necessarily reflect a judgment on a project's long-term viability. Exchanges cite varying reasons for removing tokens, including low liquidity, thin trading volumes, or shifts in regulatory posture toward certain asset categories. Kraken has not been reported to have disclosed the specific tokens affected or the reasoning behind this particular batch of removals in the available coverage.

The exchange has carried out similar delisting rounds in the past as part of ongoing portfolio maintenance. Major exchanges regularly prune their listings to manage compliance obligations and operational costs tied to supporting less active markets. For users holding any of the 13 tokens, the immediate priority is confirming their holdings and understanding the steps needed to withdraw before the deadline passes.

Market Impact

The direct market impact of a delisting affecting 13 tokens is likely to be concentrated among holders of those specific assets rather than the broader cryptocurrency market. Reduced access to Kraken as a trading venue can lower liquidity for the affected tokens, potentially increasing price volatility on remaining exchanges where they are listed.

For the wider industry, the episode is a reminder that exchange listing status is not guaranteed and can change with limited notice. Token holders and investors are often encouraged to monitor exchange announcements closely, particularly for lower-volume assets that may be more susceptible to future delisting actions.

Holders of the 13 affected tokens now face a firm deadline to act. The January 29 withdrawal cutoff gives them time to secure their assets, but inaction carries the risk of losing straightforward access through Kraken.
