Ethereum is a Layer 1 blockchain that supports digital transactions, smart contracts, and decentralized applications through a programmable network maintained by validators. Unlike blockchain systems primarily designed to transfer digital currencies, Ethereum allows developers to build applications that execute instructions and maintain records directly on the blockchain.

The network combines an account-based state model, transaction processing, proof-of-stake consensus, and computational fees to maintain a shared system. These mechanisms allow Ethereum to process transfers, execute smart contracts, and support various digital assets without relying on a central authority.

Understanding Ethereum also requires examining how other Layer 1 blockchains approach transaction processing, scalability, network security, and decentralization through different technical architectures.

What Is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a decentralized, programmable blockchain that enables users to transfer Ether (ETH), deploy smart contracts, and interact with blockchain-based applications. As a Layer 1 network, Ethereum operates its own underlying blockchain infrastructure, where validators process transactions and maintain agreement about the network’s current state.

Ethereum uses an account-based model that continuously records balances and account information, allowing smart contracts to store data and interact with other accounts. The network supports two primary account types: Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs), controlled by private keys, and Contract Accounts, controlled by deployed smart contract code.

Each account contains four essential fields: nonce, balance, code hash, and storage root. These records help Ethereum track transactions, maintain account information, and manage persistent contract data.

How Do Ethereum Transactions Work?

Ethereum transactions are instructions that change the blockchain’s existing state. They can transfer ETH, deploy smart contracts, or execute functions within applications. Each transaction contains several important fields, including the chain ID, nonce, gas limit, destination address, transferred value, transaction data, and cryptographic signature.

Once a user signs a transaction, it enters the public mempool or travels through a private relay before being selected for inclusion in a block.

Validators and block builders participate in transaction inclusion, while the Ethereum network executes valid transactions against its existing state. Successful execution updates relevant account balances, transaction nonces, contract storage, and gas accounting.

How Does Ethereum’s Proof-of-Stake Consensus Work?

Ethereum uses a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism to coordinate block production, transaction validation, and network finality. The network organizes operations into slots and epochs, with each epoch containing 32 slots. During a slot, a selected validator may propose a block, while other validators provide attestations supporting the network’s consensus process.

Ethereum distinguishes between three stages of block confirmation: inclusion, justification, and finalization. An included block has entered the blockchain, while justification indicates sufficient validator support through the checkpoint system. Finalization provides stronger settlement assurance because reversing a finalized block would require a major consensus failure.

This process allows exchanges, decentralized applications, and blockchain users to distinguish between transactions that have entered the network and those that have achieved finality.

What Are Ethereum Gas Fees?

Gas represents the computational resources required to execute transactions and smart contracts on Ethereum. Every transaction has a gas limit that determines the maximum computational work available for execution. Transactions that exhaust their allocated gas can fail, although the network still charges for computational resources consumed.

Ethereum’s EIP-1559 fee mechanism introduced two important components: the base fee and the priority fee. The base fee adjusts according to network demand and is burned, while the priority fee provides an incentive for validators to include transactions.

Consequently, Ethereum transaction costs depend on computational requirements, available blockspace, network demand, and the fee settings selected by users.

What Are Smart Contracts on Ethereum?

Smart contracts are blockchain-based programs that automatically execute predefined instructions when called through transactions or other contracts. Ethereum developers commonly write smart contracts using programming languages such as Solidity and Vyper, which are compiled into bytecode executed by the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

These programs contain functions, variables, events, and error-handling mechanisms that determine how applications operate and maintain information. Smart contracts support decentralized exchanges, lending platforms, blockchain games, governance systems, and other applications requiring programmable transactions.

Unlike ordinary ETH transfers, smart contract interactions can trigger multiple operations, update stored information, and communicate with other deployed contracts.

What Are Ethereum Token Standards?

Ethereum token standards establish common rules that allow digital assets to function across compatible wallets, exchanges, and decentralized applications. Three widely used standards are ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155.

ERC-20 supports fungible tokens, including stablecoins and governance tokens, where individual units are interchangeable. Wrapped Ether (WETH) also follows this standard, allowing ETH to interact with applications requiring ERC-20 compatibility.

ERC-721 supports non-fungible tokens representing unique digital assets, while ERC-1155 allows one smart contract to manage multiple token types, including fungible and non-fungible assets.

These standards also define important functionality involving transfers, approvals, allowances, events, and metadata, supporting consistent interaction between applications.

What Is Account Abstraction on Ethereum?

Account abstraction introduces programmable wallet functionality that extends beyond the limitations of traditional private-key-controlled accounts. Ethereum’s ERC-4337 standard enables this functionality through User Operations without requiring changes to the network’s underlying consensus mechanism.

Under this structure, users submit operations that bundlers collect and process through an Entry Point smart contract. Additional components, including aggregators and paymasters, support advanced signature verification and sponsored transaction fees.

This architecture enables wallet features such as social recovery, multiple-signature authorization, transaction batching, and flexible security controls. Account abstraction also allows applications to sponsor gas fees, reducing the requirement for users to hold ETH directly when interacting with supported wallet systems.

How Does Ethereum Compare With Other Layer 1 Blockchains?

Ethereum is one of several Layer 1 blockchains that use different technical architectures to process transactions and support decentralized applications. Other networks include Solana, Avalanche, BNB Smart Chain, Tron, Hyperliquid, Sui, Aptos, and Polygon PoS, although Polygon PoS operates through a sidechain architecture.

Solana incorporates Proof of History-based timing, while Avalanche uses a subnet architecture supporting different blockchain configurations.

Sui and Aptos employ Move-based execution models, while other networks differ in validator organization, consensus mechanisms, transaction throughput, and interoperability. These architectural differences influence network performance, security assumptions, decentralization requirements, and computational capacity.

Ethereum emphasizes security, decentralization, programmability, and a broad developer ecosystem, while alternative networks adopt different approaches to scalability and transaction execution.

Why Are Layer 1 Blockchains Important?

Layer 1 blockchains provide the underlying infrastructure required for decentralized transactions, digital assets, and blockchain applications. They establish the rules governing transaction validation, account management, consensus, network security, and smart contract execution.

Their technical architecture also determines how applications interact with blockchain infrastructure and how networks accommodate growing transaction demand. Different Layer 1 designs introduce trade-offs involving throughput, validator participation, hardware requirements, interoperability, and decentralization.

Understanding these differences helps developers and users evaluate blockchain networks according to their technical capabilities and intended applications.

Conclusion

Ethereum combines an account-based state model, proof-of-stake consensus, gas fees, smart contracts, and token standards to operate as a programmable Layer 1 blockchain.

Its transaction processing and finality mechanisms maintain network records, while account abstraction introduces additional wallet functionality and flexible transaction authorization.

Alternative Layer 1 networks address similar technical requirements through different architectures, consensus designs, and execution systems. Understanding these mechanisms provides a foundation for comparing blockchain infrastructure, application compatibility, security, and scalability.
