Grayscale has opened in-kind investing for a set of its crypto exchange-traded funds, extending the option to products covering Bitcoin, XRP, Dogecoin, and Solana. The move gives eligible participants a way to transact using the underlying digital assets rather than relying solely on cash, a structural change that separates these products from purely cash-settled fund operations.

Grayscale Opens In-Kind Investing for Four Crypto ETF Groups

The in-kind investing option now applies to Grayscale ETF products linked to four digital assets: Bitcoin, XRP, Dogecoin, and Solana. This follows Grayscale's broader push to expand product accessibility, which has also included the launch of in-kind investing services across ten digital assets as the firm scales its ETF infrastructure. For related coverage, see Grayscale Compares Bitcoin and Zcash Mining Profitability.

In-kind transactions in the ETF context mean that authorized participants can deliver or receive the underlying asset, in this case the actual cryptocurrency, rather than converting everything to and from cash at each step. For Bitcoin specifically, this preserves direct exposure to BTC at the point of creation or redemption, avoiding the bid-ask friction and potential tax events that a cash-only mechanism can introduce.

Solana's inclusion is notable given that Grayscale's Solana ETF has shown consistent demand as institutional interest in Solana-linked products has grown. Adding in-kind capability to that product aligns the fund's operational mechanics with what larger participants typically prefer when managing significant positions.

What In-Kind Investing Means for ETF Investors

Under a standard cash creation and redemption model, an authorized participant delivers cash to the fund, which then purchases the underlying asset. An in-kind model reverses that: the participant delivers the actual cryptocurrency directly, and the fund issues ETF shares in exchange. Redemptions work the same way in reverse, with shares surrendered for the underlying coins rather than their cash equivalent.

The practical effect for eligible participants is tighter operational efficiency. Bypassing the cash conversion step removes a layer of market exposure that can cause the ETF's price to drift from its net asset value during volatile periods. For Bitcoin, where block confirmation times and mempool conditions affect settlement, in-kind mechanics also provide cleaner accounting at the fund level.

Importantly, in-kind investing at the ETF level is not a retail feature. Access runs through authorized participants, typically large broker-dealers or institutional intermediaries who have signed agreements with the fund's distributor. Retail investors buying and selling ETF shares on an exchange are not directly affected by the creation and redemption mechanism, though tighter arbitrage from in-kind operations can improve secondary market pricing.

Investors considering these products should consult the fund's prospectus and relevant regulatory filings for the specific operational procedures, eligible counterparties, and any minimum basket sizes that apply. The terms governing in-kind transactions vary by fund and are set by the fund sponsor and applicable regulators.

WHAT TO KNOW

The in-kind option covers Grayscale ETF exposure linked to Bitcoin, XRP, Dogecoin, and Solana, as stated in Grayscale's announcement. This applies at the fund creation and redemption level, not to ordinary share purchases on a stock exchange.

Actual access and transaction handling depend on the applicable fund process and eligible intermediaries. Authorized participants must meet the fund's operational requirements; individual investors cannot transact in-kind directly with the fund. Review the relevant fund documents before drawing conclusions about personal eligibility.

The expansion of in-kind mechanisms across multiple assets reflects the maturation of crypto ETF structures in the United States. Early spot crypto ETFs launched with cash-only redemption models, partly due to regulatory caution around exchanges and custodians handling direct crypto transfers. The shift toward in-kind capability signals that the operational and compliance infrastructure has developed enough to support it at scale.

For Bitcoin, the significance extends beyond operational efficiency. An in-kind Bitcoin ETF means that Bitcoin itself, rather than its dollar representation, is the unit of account in the creation basket. That structural detail matters for participants focused on preserving Bitcoin exposure without unnecessary conversion through fiat rails. Spot Bitcoin ETF flows have been closely watched as a proxy for institutional demand, and in-kind mechanics provide those institutions with a more precise instrument for managing that exposure.

Grayscale's position in the crypto ETF market has evolved significantly as competitors have entered the space. The firm has expanded into altcoin-linked products, including Solana and Dogecoin ETFs, while maintaining its flagship Bitcoin product. Grayscale has described the current period as a new ETF era, with products across a range of digital assets now reaching meaningful scale. The in-kind capability for four of those products is a structural upgrade consistent with that positioning.

Bitcoin's network fundamentals remain the baseline against which all crypto ETF development is measured. The addition of in-kind investing mechanics for Bitcoin ETFs brings the fund structure closer to how traditional commodity ETFs, such as gold funds, have historically operated, where physical delivery rather than cash settlement is the standard for authorized participants. That convergence toward commodity-style mechanics is a signal of Bitcoin's continued trajectory as a recognized institutional asset class.
