EIP-1559 explained in a single line: it’s the August 2021 upgrade that replaced Ethereum’s gas bidding contest with a protocol-set base fee that gets destroyed after every transaction.
Readers keep returning to the topic because the design still shapes each transaction, and because Ethereum news today regularly ties pricing mechanics to supply, scaling, and the next network upgrade.
This guide covers how the cost is built, where the burned ETH goes, what changed for users, and which limits the design never fixed.

What Is EIP-1559 and Why Did Ethereum Need a New Fee Model?

An Ethereum Improvement Proposal, or EIP, is a formal document describing a network change, and core proposals like this one only go live through a coordinated upgrade. The proposal was created in April 2019 by developers that included Vitalik Buterin, and it reached mainnet on August 5, 2021, through the London hard fork.
Before it, Ethereum priced transactions through a first-price auction, where senders attached a bid per unit of gas and block producers picked the highest bidders. Gas measures how much computation a transaction needs, so a simple transfer costs 21,000 units, while a complex contract call costs far more.
The specification itself says this setup pushed many users into overpaying while others waited several blocks for inclusion.

How the EIP-1559 Base Fee Works Block by Block

Every block now carries a base fee set by the protocol rather than by bidders. The target block size is half of the block gas limit, and a block can stretch to twice that target, so short bursts of demand no longer turn into bidding wars.
When a block fills above the target, the next base fee rises, and when it fills below, it falls, with a maximum move of 12.5% per block.
Because the largest possible change is known in advance, an ethereum wallet can estimate upcoming fees with reasonable confidence and fill them in automatically, and the specification expects most users to never adjust gas settings by hand.

Why the Priority Tip Still Matters for Fast Transactions

A transaction now carries two user settings: a priority fee, often called the tip, and a max fee. The tip goes to the validator who includes the transaction, and it rewards faster inclusion when many senders compete for the same block. That cap is the ceiling the sender accepts per unit of gas for the base and tip combined.
A worked example from published educational material makes the split clear. With a cap of 100 Gwei, a base fee of 70 Gwei, and a tip of 10 Gwei, the cost comes to 80 Gwei, and the remaining 20 Gwei returns to the sender, where one Gwei equals one billionth of an ETH.

How EIP-1559 Burns ETH and Reshapes Token Supply

Burning means the base fee is permanently removed from circulation instead of being paid to anyone. The specification gives two reasons: only ETH can pay for transactions, and block producers lose any incentive to manipulate a charge they never receive.
EIP-1559 explained purely as a deflation story misses a point the authors made themselves. The specification warns that burning rules out a fixed supply and that the network could end up inflationary or deflationary depending on whether more ETH is burned than issued.
Here’s the thing: that balance rests on demand for block space, which no developer controls, so the “ultra sound money” label only holds when activity outweighs staking rewards.

Does EIP-1559 Make Ethereum Gas Fees Cheaper for Users?

Not in the long run. Fees still depend on demand compared with available block space, and the upgrade only smooths the path by letting blocks stretch during surges. Turns out, EIP-1559, explained at the cost level, shows better predictability rather than lower cost, because capacity never changed. So why does the upgrade still get credit for cheaper gas?
Real savings come from scaling. An Ethereum layer 2 network processes transactions away from the main chain and posts the results back, which is why fees there tend to run lower, while an Ethereum bridge moves assets between those networks and the main chain with gas still due on the base layer.

How EIP-1559 Affects Wallets, Smart Contracts, and Validators

For wallets, the change turned cost setting into a prediction task: estimate the next base fee, add a small tip, and expose a maximum as a safety cap. Ethereum smart contracts felt it quietly, since the GASPRICE opcode now returns only the price paid by the sender, and applications that rebuild block headers had to add the new base fee field.
Validators, who produce blocks after the move to proof of stake, keep only the tips. That arrangement removes any reason to push the base fee higher, since the protocol destroys it before anyone can pocket it.

What Does the Data Say About Ethereum Fees Today?

The stronger signal is cost predictability. The main concern is the supply story, because burn volume depends on activity, and if more activity moves to layer 2 networks, a lower base fee may land on the main chain. The deflation narrative therefore remains unproven.
Ethereum price is a separate matter. Demand, staking, exchange flows, and market mood all shape it, so the burn is one input among many. As of October 2026, Ethereum Glamsterdam is the next major upgrade, scheduled by the ETH Foundation for the Sepolia test network on October 6, with a fourth-quarter mainnet target and no mainnet date set.

Risks, Limits, and Common Myths About EIP-1559

Myth 1: The burn always makes ETH deflationary. The specification itself says supply depends on whether more ETH is burned than issued.

Myth 2: The upgrade cut gas prices for good. EIP-1559 explained by its own specification, shows it improved cost predictability, not capacity.

Scam risk: Ethereum scams add a practical danger, often through fake support agents and cloned websites.

Common scam claims: Fake “gas refund” or “fee unlock” demands are used to pressure users into paying.

Reality check: Gas settings come from the wallet and the protocol, and no website can waive the base fee.

EIP-1559 Explained: What Should Readers Remember?

The upgrade replaced a guessing game with a transparent formula, split each charge into a burned base fee and a validator tip, and gave wallets a predictable path to set costs. It didn’t make Ethereum cheap, and it didn’t guarantee a shrinking supply.
What stays uncertain is how burn volume behaves as layer 2 networks grow and as the next upgrade changes block capacity. Comparing the official specification with live network data is the safest way to verify the details.
