Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh declined to signal whether the Federal Open Market Committee will raise interest rates again at its upcoming October meeting, according to reports from a fireside chat he held with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on October 15, 2026. The noncommittal stance leaves traders and investors without the forward guidance markets have come to expect ahead of a scheduled policy decision, with Bitcoin holding near $82,720 and the broader crypto market tilting toward optimism.

What Kevin Warsh Said About an October Rate Hike

Warsh appeared alongside IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva at an official IMF fireside chat streamed live on October 15, 2026, billed as a conversation about the forces reshaping the global economy. Rather than offering a directional signal on the next FOMC decision, Warsh reportedly declined to preview his position on whether a further rate increase was on the table. For related coverage, see Bitcoin Falls to $78.4K as Fed's Warsh Downplays....

According to a single-source report from CoinGape, Warsh said he does not prejudge meetings and does not believe in saying in advance what he might do at remaining meetings this year. That characterization has not yet been independently verified against an official IMF transcript; the precise wording should be treated as unconfirmed until a primary record is available.
The refusal to signal is itself meaningful. When the chair of the Federal Reserve declines to indicate a direction, markets are left to price uncertainty rather than expectation, and that uncertainty can move assets in either direction depending on how participants interpret the silence.
Why the October FOMC Decision Remains Open

The policy backdrop gives context to why traders were listening closely. On September 16, 2026, the FOMC raised its target range for the federal funds rate to 3.75% to 4.00%, continuing what has been a prolonged tightening cycle. That decision set the stage for the question Warsh declined to answer: whether the committee would move again at its next scheduled meeting.

The next scheduled FOMC meeting is October 27 and 28, 2026. That two-day window is now less than two weeks away, which is precisely why Warsh's silence carries weight. Historically, Fed chairs have used public appearances in the weeks before a meeting to either confirm or walk back market expectations; an explicit refusal to do so is itself a form of communication.

It is important to distinguish what Warsh's response was and was not. Declining to signal is not the same as confirming a hike, nor is it a signal that the committee intends to hold. The FOMC operates as a collective body, and its decisions are shaped by economic data available at the time of the meeting, not by public statements made days in advance. Warsh's position, as chair, is to represent that institutional discipline.

This episode echoes a broader pattern in Warsh's public communication style. Readers following crypto traders bracing for Warsh's Jackson Hole speech earlier this year will recall similar anticipation around what he would or would not say, with markets moving on the ambiguity as much as on any explicit statement.

According to a single-source report from CoinGape, CME FedWatch odds for a 25-basis-point October hike may have shifted following the remarks. That probability move has not been independently confirmed from CME's live tool, and should be treated as unconfirmed; the dynamic nature of FedWatch pricing means any figure cited after the fact may not reflect what the tool showed in real time.

How Crypto Markets Are Responding to the Uncertainty

Bitcoin was trading at $82,720, up roughly 1.04% over the prior 24 hours, with a market capitalization near $1.66 trillion and 24-hour trading volume around $25.3 billion. XRP was holding at approximately $1.31 over the same period.

The broader sentiment reading supports the cautiously constructive price action. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 59, classified as Greed, suggesting that while participants are not in a panic over the rate uncertainty, the reading is not at euphoric extremes that would imply complacency either.

The relationship between Federal Reserve rate policy and crypto asset prices is not one-directional. A further hike, if it materialized, could strengthen the dollar and pressure risk assets including Bitcoin; but a hold, or an outcome that comes in below the most hawkish expectations, could provide a tailwind. With Warsh declining to guide the market's expectations, both scenarios remain live, and participants on both sides of that trade are positioned accordingly.

Previous instances where Warsh's communication left room for interpretation have produced notable volatility. Coverage of how Bitcoin fell to $78,400 when Warsh downplayed softer inflation data illustrates how quickly sentiment can shift when a Fed chair sets expectations in one direction. The current episode is structurally different: the absence of any directional signal leaves the distribution of outcomes wider than it was after that episode.

What to Watch Before the October 27-28 Decision

With the October 27-28 meeting now confirmed on the official FOMC calendar, the primary resolution mechanism is the committee's own post-meeting policy statement and, if a press conference follows, Warsh's remarks at that time. Until then, any market-implied probability figure from tools like CME FedWatch represents collective trader positioning, not an official forecast.

Official FOMC communications, including any statement released after the October meeting, will be authoritative. Interim remarks from other Fed governors or regional presidents may also shift expectations, but none carries the same weight as the chair's statement at the close of the meeting itself. Separating those official channels from market speculation and media paraphrase is the discipline that will determine how well-positioned any observer is when the decision lands.

For those monitoring the crypto angle, the outcome of the October meeting will likely move both Bitcoin and XRP; the current price stability at $82,720 and $1.31 respectively reflects a market that is pricing neither a confirmed hike nor a confirmed pause, but sitting squarely in the middle. That equilibrium is unlikely to persist past October 28. Separately, the broader macro conversation Warsh held with Georgieva at the IMF about forces reshaping the global economy may offer additional context on the Fed's medium-term thinking, though no formal transcript has been published to date from that event.
