The SEC approved Cboe rule changes allowing binary options contracts tied to Coinbase and MARA business metrics, a structure that locks in settlement outcomes at expiry regardless of subsequent data revisions.

What the SEC Approval Means for Cboe's Binary Options Rules

The approval covers rule changes filed by Cboe, authorizing a new class of contracts structured as binary options, meaning each contract resolves to one of exactly two outcomes determined by a defined condition tied to company operating metrics. This is a regulatory-rule approval, not an endorsement of either company's performance or prospects. For related coverage, see SEC Approves 3x Leveraged Bitcoin, Ether ETPs for Trading: Bloomberg.

The SEC's action follows a pattern of exchange-rule filings that Cboe has pursued for derivatives tied to crypto-adjacent equities; the exchange previously filed with the SEC to list 3x Bitcoin and Ether ETFs. Binary options on equity metrics represent a narrower, event-driven product distinct from leveraged index exposure. The underlying Cboe rule filing can be located through the SEC's EDGAR full-text search system.

How Coinbase and MARA Business Metrics Determine Contract Outcomes

Coinbase (COIN) and Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA) are the two companies named as reference entities. Each binary option resolves yes or no based on whether a specified business metric, such as revenue, earnings, or transaction volume, clears a defined threshold over a set reporting period.

The exact metric, threshold, and contract terms should be confirmed directly from Cboe's applicable rule filing and product specifications; the research available does not specify those parameters. Coinbase operating metrics binary options have drawn attention as a novel instrument because they reference fundamental business data rather than spot price levels.

Unlike vanilla equity options where payoff scales continuously with price, binary options carry a fixed payout, so open interest and positioning dynamics differ materially from standard options chains. The contract either pays the fixed settlement amount or it does not; continuous delta-hedging does not apply in the same manner.

What Happens at Expiry and Settlement

At expiry, the contract's designated calculation agent determines whether the referenced metric met the contract condition, using the data source specified in the contract terms. The settlement amount is fixed, not variable, so the payout does not scale with how far the metric beat or missed the threshold.

A key feature of these contracts, as reported by CryptoSlate, is that contracts remain settled even when the underlying company restates its reported numbers after expiry. Once the settlement determination is made against the data available at the calculation date, the outcome is final; subsequent restatements do not reopen or reverse the settled position.

Traders and risk desks should review the official Cboe contract specifications for settlement timing, the designated data source, any adjustment provisions for extraordinary events, and the calculation methodology before taking positions. For context on related derivative approvals, the SEC has also approved 3x Bitcoin futures ETF listings and cleared XRP ETF options for the US market, indicating a broadening regulatory posture toward structured crypto-linked products. The SEC's approval of the rules does not constitute guidance on appropriate use; suitability analysis remains the trader's responsibility.
