Zcash's proposed NU7 network upgrade would permanently block spending from the Sprout pool by invalidating version 4 transactions, the only transaction format that supports Sprout transfers. The change, outlined in ZIP 2003, has not yet been assigned a mainnet activation height, but its passage would render any remaining Sprout funds unspendable with no stated path to re-enable access.

ZIP 2003 Targets Version 4 Transactions

ZIP 2003 proposes disallowing all version 4 transactions from NU7 onward. Because Sprout transfers can only be represented in version 4 transactions, and neither version 5 nor version 6 supports the Sprout format, the proposal would effectively disable spending of all Sprout funds once NU7 activates.
The companion deployment specification, ZIP 259, confirms that after NU7 activation, version 4 transactions will not be valid, and any funds remaining in the Sprout pool would become permanently unspendable. Notably, ZIP 2003 does not burn or unissue the Sprout balance; those ZEC would remain technically issued on-chain but inaccessible.
CryptoSlate reported a balance of 22,309.44 ZEC remaining in the Sprout pool at block 3,521,260 on Oct. 17, citing the zkp.baby dashboard.
Proposal Scope: Sprout Only

The freeze applies exclusively to the legacy Sprout pool. Zcash's Sapling and Orchard pools, which use version 5 and version 6 transactions respectively, are unaffected by ZIP 2003's proposal. Users holding ZEC in transparent, Sapling, or Orchard addresses would see no change to their ability to transact.

ZIP 2003 explicitly warns that the ability to spend Sprout funds may never be re-enabled after NU7 activation. The proposal frames the change as a protocol simplification, retiring a legacy transaction format that predates Zcash's current shielded pool architecture. ZEC has seen significant trading activity recently, with ZEC surging 12% to $1,300 just ahead of the Fed rate decision, underscoring continued market attention on the asset.

What Affected Users Should Watch Next

The NU7 deployment draft in ZIP 259 has not yet assigned a mainnet activation height, meaning this remains a proposal rather than a finalized consensus rule. Holders with funds in the Sprout pool should monitor official Zcash upgrade announcements for any activation timeline.

ZEC was quoted at $1,077.73, down 6.37% over 24 hours in the market-data snapshot at time of writing. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 53 (Neutral). These figures are market context only and do not establish a causal link to the NU7 proposal.

The immediate milestone to track is whether the Zcash development community assigns a mainnet activation block height to ZIP 259. Until that block height is published, no timeline for the spending freeze is confirmed. Separately, Grayscale's moves in the Zcash space, including its Zcash ETF hitting $1 billion, add institutional context to how legacy protocol changes may be received by broader market participants. Holders with Sprout balances should review official ZIP documentation and consider their options before any activation date is set.
