Solana could experience a sharp decline in its reported transaction counts on October 21, even as one of the network's most significant upgrades promises to make payments settle substantially faster.
The blockchain is preparing to activate Alpenglow, a new consensus system targeting transaction finality of approximately 150 milliseconds, compared with the current 12.8 seconds. However, the upgrade also removes validator voting transactions from blocks, potentially causing headline network activity figures to fall without any corresponding decline in actual user demand.
According to the <a href="https://solana.com/upgrades/alpenglow" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Solana Foundation</a>, the transition is scheduled for epoch 1064, expected to begin around 15:00 UTC on Wednesday, October 21.Why Solana's Transaction Counts Could Suddenly Fall
Solana currently uses TowerBFT, a consensus mechanism requiring validators to submit onchain voting transactions to confirm blocks.
Those votes contribute to the blockchain's overall transaction count, even though they do not represent ordinary payments, decentralized exchange trades or user interactions.
Alpenglow replaces that process with Votor, which allows validators to exchange votes directly and combine approvals into cryptographic certificates.
Solana Compass estimated that validator votes accounted for approximately 63% of transaction activity between October 10 and 12, averaging around 3,060 votes per second against 1,780 user transactions.
If similar proportions persist, removing voting transactions could make reported TPS appear dramatically lower immediately after activation.
That would complicate comparisons with earlier measurements, including periods when Solana was reported to dominate <a href="https://coinpaper.com/15738/solana-news-sol-handles-44-of-all-crypto-transactions-globally" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">blockchain transaction activity</a>.
It would also make non-vote transactions a more useful measure of actual network demand.Alpenglow Targets 150-Millisecond Finality
The upgrade's larger objective is to change how quickly transactions become irreversible.
Under TowerBFT, finality generally takes about 12.8 seconds. Alpenglow targets roughly 150 milliseconds, an improvement of approximately 98.8%, although realized performance will depend on network conditions.
For payment applications and cross-chain infrastructure, shorter finality could reduce the time required before transactions are treated as settled.
The change follows broader attempts to improve Solana's infrastructure, including earlier work on <a href="https://coinpaper.com/16246/solana-partners-triton-one-to-fix-key-bottleneck-as-sol-eyes-95-breakout" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">network bottlenecks</a> and the development of alternative validator software.
However, Alpenglow initially introduces only Votor. Rotor, a separate planned improvement to block-data distribution, has no confirmed activation date.
The distinction also matters when comparing Solana with other <a href="https://coinpaper.com/5925/these-blockchain-platforms-offer-blazing-fast-finality" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">fast-finality blockchains</a>, where confirmation speed and the number of transactions processed measure different aspects of performance.Validator Economics and Infrastructure Face Changes
The transition requires validator operators to run compatible software based on Agave 4.3.0. Firedancer and Frankendancer operators must temporarily switch to supported clients during migration.
The upgrade also replaces ordinary voting transaction fees with a validator admission charge of 0.8 SOL per epoch.
According to the Foundation, the existing consensus mechanism will continue operating for approximately 5,000 slots after the target epoch begins, before Alpenglow takes over.
Developers operating block explorers and analytics platforms must also account for disappearing vote transactions to avoid misrepresenting the network's activity.
Alpenglow has already featured in <a href="https://coinpaper.com/34317/solana-price-prediction-sol-targets-80-breakout-as-alpenglow-fuels-recovery-hopes" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">SOL market analysis</a>, but faster finality does not automatically establish a bullish price outcome.
For investors, the timing coincides with a market in which Solana has faced <a href="https://coinpaper.com/37013/bitcoin-falls-to-81k-as-ethereum-and-solana-extend-crypto-selloff" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">broader crypto selling</a>.
