Meta Platforms faces a major test of investor confidence when it reports third-quarter earnings on October 21, with Wall Street looking for evidence that its enormous artificial intelligence spending program can deliver stronger profits rather than simply higher infrastructure costs.
The company expects to spend between $130 billion and $145 billion on capital expenditures during 2026, including finance-lease principal payments. Meanwhile, analysts anticipate approximately $63.3 billion in third-quarter revenue, placing Meta's advertising performance and AI investment returns under renewed scrutiny.
Options traders are pricing a potential 6% move in META shares following the announcement, equivalent to approximately $42 in either direction from Friday's $709.33 closing price. That represents an implied market move, not a forecast of which direction the stock will take.Meta's $145 Billion AI Investment Faces Its Next Test
According to <a href="https://investor.atmeta.com/investor-news/press-release-details/2026/Meta-Reports-Second-Quarter-2026-Results/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Meta's latest earnings release</a>, management narrowed its annual capital expenditure outlook to $130 billion–$145 billion, compared with its previous $125 billion-$145 billion range.
The spending covers AI infrastructure and Meta's existing businesses, including data centers, servers, networking equipment and finance leases. It is not entirely attributable to a single AI model or product.
Meta reported $60.8 billion in second-quarter revenue, up 28% year over year, while quarterly capital expenditures reached $31.1 billion and free cash flow fell to approximately $784 million.
That tension previously contributed to a <a href="https://coinpaper.com/33708/meta-stock-crashes-9-after-earnings-as-ai-spending-overshadows-revenue-growth" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">post-earnings selloff</a>, despite strong advertising growth.
Investors will now examine whether higher advertising revenue, operating margins and cash generation can offset increasing depreciation, infrastructure and personnel expenses.Wall Street Expects $63 Billion in Revenue as AI Costs Rise
Analysts expect Meta's third-quarter revenue to reach approximately $63.3 billion, representing growth of roughly 24% from the previous year.
That would place revenue near the upper end of management's $61 billion–$64 billion forecast, although actual results remain unknown until Wednesday.
Meta's expanding AI operations could eventually strengthen its core advertising business through better recommendations, targeting and automated campaign tools.
Its <a href="https://coinpaper.com/36116/meta-muse-ai-hits-millions-of-downloads-but-its-biggest-test-is-just-beginning" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Muse AI assistant</a> also offers another possible commercial opportunity, though questions remain about monetization and the costs of running increasingly sophisticated models.
Meta introduced Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full on October 14, further escalating competition with OpenAI and Anthropic ahead of its earnings announcement.
The challenge is determining how much of Meta's infrastructure spending can generate durable returns, an issue explored in Coinpaper's guide to <a href="https://coinpaper.com/35122/how-to-tell-whether-big-techs-ai-spending-is-actually-paying-off" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">AI investment returns</a>.Why Meta Earnings Matter Beyond META Stock
Meta's results arrive during a broader reassessment of the AI investment boom.
Technology shares have faced pressure as investors question whether data-center construction and expensive computing hardware will eventually produce adequate cash flow.
Coinpaper recently examined <a href="https://coinpaper.com/37404/who-actually-gets-paid-when-microsoft-google-and-meta-spend-100-billion-on-ai-infrastructure" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">AI infrastructure costs</a>, including how spending flows to semiconductor manufacturers, construction companies and power suppliers before technology firms necessarily earn returns.
Meta has also explored <a href="https://coinpaper.com/32605/meta-stock-jumps-12-as-meta-moves-to-sell-excess-ai-compute" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">selling excess computing capacity</a>, potentially creating another revenue stream from its infrastructure investments. However, that business remains a developing initiative rather than an established source of earnings.
For investors, October 21 is therefore about more than whether Meta beats quarterly estimates. The bigger question is whether management can demonstrate that its accelerating AI investments will strengthen profitability and future cash flow.
