President Donald Trump

A 60-day review of sanctions relief on Russian oil arrives alongside heightened crypto focus on upcoming Federal Reserve decisions.

President Donald Trump has waived new tariffs targeting Russian oil as a deadline set for October 18 came into effect, according to CryptoSlate. The waiver delays additional economic pressure tied to Russia's energy exports, a policy area that has repeatedly shaped global markets since sanctions first expanded after the invasion of Ukraine.

Daily Sabah Business reported that the administration will conduct a formal assessment of the broader Russia sanctions waiver within 60 days. That window leaves open the possibility of renewed tariffs or an extension of relief, depending on how the review concludes. The short timeline keeps the issue active rather than settling it.

Coindoo's coverage framed the waiver against a bitcoin market that appears more attentive to the Federal Reserve than to the latest geopolitical development. Traders have spent recent weeks parsing signals on interest rate policy, inflation data, and the central bank's balance sheet approach. Those factors tend to carry more weight for crypto pricing than individual sanctions decisions.

This is not the first time Russia-related energy policy has intersected with crypto markets. Sanctions on Russian oil exports have periodically triggered volatility in commodity and currency markets, with knock-on effects for risk assets broadly. Bitcoin has at times moved in tandem with those shifts, though the correlation has been inconsistent.

The interplay between geopolitics and monetary policy matters because both channels affect the liquidity conditions that drive crypto valuations. Sanctions and tariffs can alter energy prices and inflation expectations. Those inflation dynamics, in turn, feed into the Fed's rate decisions. A waiver that reduces near-term economic friction could, in theory, ease one input into that inflation picture, even as other factors dominate trader attention.

Market participants watching bitcoin have increasingly treated Fed policy as the primary macro signal. Rate decisions influence the cost of capital and the appeal of risk assets relative to safer instruments. When the Fed signals tightening or easing, crypto markets often react more sharply than they do to individual geopolitical announcements, even significant ones involving a major oil-exporting nation.

The 60-day review window set by the administration means this story is not closed. Markets will likely revisit the Russia sanctions question again before the end of that period. Whether that review coincides with any major Fed announcement could determine how much attention the geopolitical angle ultimately receives from crypto traders.

Market Impact

The immediate market impact of the tariff waiver appears limited for crypto assets, based on the reporting reviewed. Bitcoin traders have reportedly kept their primary focus on Federal Reserve policy signals rather than on the Russia sanctions decision itself. This suggests the waiver is being processed more as a macroeconomic and geopolitical data point than as a direct crypto catalyst.

That said, the 60-day reassessment period introduces a future point of uncertainty. Any change in the Russia sanctions stance could affect energy prices and broader inflation expectations, which in turn could feed into Fed deliberations. Crypto markets that are already sensitive to rate policy may feel indirect effects from that chain of events, even if the initial waiver itself draws a muted reaction from traders.

For now, the Russia tariff waiver and the Fed's policy path are running on separate tracks in the eyes of crypto traders, but the 60-day review could bring the two closer together.
