A headline is making the rounds: Japan’s XRP ETF listing is getting closer, and it may boost the price.&nbsp;
<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/xrp-news-today-bitwise-561m-etf-blackrock-rumor-price-drop" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP News Today</a> checks that claim against the facts. Japan has taken real steps, but the first listing is still likely a year or more away, and the headline itself is four months old.

According to live market data, <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/why-ripple-handed-xrp-to-evernorth-and-where-xrp-heads-from-1-30" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">the coin was trading</a> near $1.29, down 1.11% over 24 hours, after a sudden dip to about $1.275 overnight.

The chart opened near $1.31 and slid slowly through the afternoon and evening.&nbsp;
Around 3 AM on the chart’s clock came a sharp drop to about $1.275, but it bounced back within minutes. The coin then climbed to about $1.30 in the morning and eased back to $1.29.&nbsp;
Volume fell 31%, and only about 1.4% of the coin’s total value changed hands, so it was a quiet day.
When the Yahoo Finance story came out on June 12, the coin traded near $1.14, so it is about 13% higher today, by our math.&nbsp;
Still, it is about 65% below its all-time high of $3.65 in July 2025, according to<a href="https://247wallst.com/investing/cryptocurrency/2026/09/30/will-blackrock-launch-an-xrp-etf/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">24/7 Wall St.</a> Readers following XRP news today will notice that the Japan's talk has not produced a breakout.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-the-headline-behind-the-buzz-span-span">The Headline Behind the Buzz</h3>
The<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/japan-xrp-etf-listing-getting-121918629.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Yahoo Finance story</a> is dated June 12, 2026. It says SBI Holdings has outlined plans for Japan’s first dual Bitcoin and <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/what-is-xrp-xrp-ledger-explained-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP fund</a> on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.&nbsp;
It adds that filings are reportedly in a “late-stage” review at <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/stablecoin-crypto-news-japan-big-banks-joint-yen-stablecoin-test" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Japan’s financial</a> regulator, the FSA. The same story also says plainly that no approval date has been confirmed.

So the headline promises more than the story delivers. It is a third-party report leaning on analysts and community comments, and it is four months old.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-who-is-sbi-and-what-does-it-want-to-launch-span-span">Who Is SBI and What Does It Want to Launch?</h3>
SBI Holdings is one of Japan’s biggest financial groups. According to 24/7 Wall St., it has two products in mind:

 </tr>

Here is why SBI is seen as a strong candidate:
<ul>
 <li style="margin-left: 0px; list-style-type: disc">In July 2024, SBI signed an agreement with Franklin Templeton to build a joint venture in Japan.</li>
 <li style="margin-left: 0px; list-style-type: disc">Franklin Templeton already runs a spot fund in the U.S., which holds $402 million, <a href="https://maketo.com/etf/xrp" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">according to Maketo</a>.</li>
 <li style="margin-left: 0px; list-style-type: disc">SBI has worked with Ripple in Japan since 2016, and Yahoo Finance reports that its joint venture with Ripple gave it deep experience with the coin.</li>
 <li style="margin-left: 0px; list-style-type: disc">Its reported goal is about ¥5 trillion, or $32 billion, within three years of launch.</li>
</ul>

Here is the timeline from the reports we found:

There is some confusion about August 2025.SBI spokesperson saying no applications would be filed until Japan finalized its rules, while later reports describe the plans as already filed. Reports differ, so we describe them as plans.
The report also says a separate change to the law on investment funds is still needed, and that tax changes run on another track. So “closer” is true, but it is slow.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-could-it-lift-the-coin-span-span">Could It Lift the Coin?</h3>
The U.S. offers a test case. According to Maketo, five U.S. funds hold $1.52 billion as of October 15, yet the coin still sits near $1.29. The Yahoo story also asks whether approval is already partly priced in.&nbsp;
Anyone following XRP news today should treat any promised boost as a guess.
Here is what to watch next:
<ul>
 <li style="margin-left: 0px; list-style-type: disc">The next steps on Japan’s investment fund law.</li>
 <li style="margin-left: 0px; list-style-type: disc">Any statement from the FSA or SBI with dates.</li>
 <li style="margin-left: 0px; list-style-type: disc">Whether the coin holds above this morning’s low near $1.275.</li>
 <li style="margin-left: 0px; list-style-type: disc">Whether trading volume stays quiet.</li>
</ul>
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-conclusion-span-span">Conclusion</h3>
Japan is moving toward its first listing, and the law is in place, but the first fund is likely not before 2027 or 2028.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, the coin is quiet at $1.29. The smartest approach is to follow the confirmed steps and ignore the hype. Keep checking XRP News Today for the next update.
