Bitcoin, Ether and AI-linked stock perpetuals fell sharply as traders flagged rising 'Black Monday' fears, triggering a broad risk-off move that swept across both crypto spot markets and derivative instruments simultaneously.

Cross-Asset Selloff Hits Bitcoin, Ether and AI Perpetuals at Once

The selloff was notable for its breadth: Bitcoin and Ether moved lower in tandem with perpetual contracts tied to AI-related equities, signaling that the risk-off mood was not contained to any single market segment. CryptoPotato reported that the simultaneous dump across crypto and AI stock perpetuals reflected macro-driven positioning rather than asset-specific catalysts. For related coverage, see American Bitcoin Mines 932 BTC in Q2, Reserves Pass 8,000.

'Black Monday' is trader shorthand for a rapid, broad-based risk-asset selloff, evoking the October 1987 stock market crash. Its use as a framing device in this episode points to elevated concern among market participants that the decline could deepen rather than stabilize quickly.

The presence of AI stock perpetual contracts alongside Bitcoin and Ether in the selloff is significant. These instruments allow traders to hold ongoing leveraged exposure to AI-equity prices without a fixed expiry date, and they have grown in open interest as exchanges expanded product suites. When sentiment turns, these contracts can unwind quickly alongside crypto majors.

Why Perpetual Markets Can Amplify a Risk-Off Move

Perpetual contracts carry leverage, meaning a move against an open position can trigger liquidations faster than in spot markets. Forced close-outs add sell pressure, which can feed into further price declines across correlated instruments. This mechanism applies to both crypto perpetuals and the newer generation of pre-IPO and AI-linked perpetuals now traded on major venues.

Funding rates and open interest are the two signals traders watch most closely during sharp moves. Negative funding on Bitcoin and Ether perpetuals indicates that short positions are paying longs, a sign bearish sentiment has become dominant. Rising open interest alongside falling prices suggests new short positions are being opened rather than longs being closed, which can sustain downward pressure.

The regulatory backdrop for Bitcoin perpetual futures and the expansion of leveraged derivative access has meant that a broader range of participants now hold positions that can unwind simultaneously during a risk-off episode.

What Traders Are Watching Next

Key signals to monitor include spot price recovery or continuation on Bitcoin and Ether, liquidation data covering the four-hour window around the initial drop, and whether funding rates on major perpetual venues normalize or remain negative. The broader debate over leveraged crypto product access adds a regulatory dimension worth tracking alongside the price action.

AI equity performance during the next US trading session will also shape the perpetual market. If AI stocks stabilize, the cross-asset selling pressure that characterized this episode may ease. If they extend losses, perpetual markets tied to those names could see continued outflows. Bitcoin exchange reserve trends, tracked via on-chain data, remain an additional metric relevant to assessing whether Bitcoin supply on exchanges is rising or falling during the selloff.
