UBS expects the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates twice more, targeting December 2026 and March 2027, as U.S. inflation remains elevated. The Swiss bank's forecast signals a more prolonged tightening cycle than many market participants had anticipated, with direct implications for risk assets across Southeast Asian markets.

UBS Forecasts Fed Rate Hikes in December 2026 and March 2027

According to reporting on the UBS forecast, the bank projects two additional Federal Reserve rate increases: one in December 2026 and a follow-up in March 2027. These would represent continued policy tightening well into the next calendar year, extending the rate cycle beyond what many analysts had priced in.
The Federal Reserve's policy meeting schedule, published on the Fed's official FOMC calendar, confirms scheduled meetings that align with those projected windows. UBS's call positions the bank among the more hawkish voices in the current macro debate. This comes at a time when other Fed observers have declined to signal near-term hikes, making UBS's two-hike timeline a notably firm outlier view.

Why Persistent U.S. Inflation Is Central to the UBS View

The foundation of UBS's forecast is an assessment that U.S. inflation is staying elevated rather than returning to the Fed's 2% target on schedule. In UBS's view, this persistent price pressure removes the conditions needed for the Fed to pause or cut rates, instead creating the basis for additional tightening through the first quarter of 2027.
This inflation-driven logic matters for Southeast Asian economies and exchanges. Regional central banks in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand have historically calibrated their own rate decisions partly against Fed movements. A prolonged U.S. tightening cycle could sustain pressure on regional currencies and increase the cost of dollar-denominated capital flows into ASEAN crypto markets.
Platforms such as Indodax, Tokocrypto, and Coins.ph operate in markets where local currency depreciation against the dollar directly affects retail purchasing power for crypto assets. The UBS forecast, if accurate, would extend that pressure further than many regional traders currently expect. Institutional interest in digital assets in the region has been growing, but a higher-for-longer Fed rate environment tends to dampen appetite for risk assets broadly.
Forecast Milestones to Monitor

UBS's two projected hike dates are forecasts, not confirmed Fed decisions. Whether December 2026 and March 2027 materialize as tightening events depends on how U.S. inflation data evolves in the months ahead. If price pressures ease faster than UBS expects, the bank would likely revise its timeline.

For Southeast Asian crypto markets, the relevant trigger points are the FOMC meetings preceding each projected date. Traders and exchanges in the region should watch U.S. CPI releases and Fed commentary leading into those windows as the primary indicators of whether UBS's hawkish call holds. Major banks have also issued their own long-range digital asset outlooks that intersect with this macro backdrop, adding further layers to how ASEAN investors may position through the cycle.

The UBS view adds weight to growing expectations of crypto market volatility tied to the Fed's rate path. Regional exchanges and regulators across ASEAN will need to account for the possibility that tighter U.S. monetary conditions remain in place through mid-2027, shaping both liquidity conditions and investor risk appetite across the region.
