Red candles are back on every chart, and traders want to know why. Why crypto market is down today? The single largest order was a $7.43 million liquidation on Binance’s ETHUSDT pair. Long traders bet on prices rising and got caught out hardest, which tells you most of the market was still leaning bullish right before the drop.

Per The Kobeissi Letter, US CPI inflation rose to 3.7% on Wednesday, sending the 10-year Treasury yield surging to 5.33%. This is one of the major reasons behind why crypto market is down today as about 24 hours later, that yield had dropped 30 basis points as the S&P 500 and tech stocks sold off. Today, yields are climbing again as equities recover.

Over the past two months, the only thing that has reliably pushed yields lower has been a stock market downturn, and that same tug-of-war between bonds and equities is now bleeding into crypto.

What’s Next for the Crypto Market?

The next big date is October 28, 2026, when the Fed meets, with high odds pointing to no rate change. A few major launches are also lined up this week:

October 18:Dusk Domains goes live on mainnet, activating .dusk domain trading with DUSK escrow and routing protocol revenue into on-chain DUSK liquidity.

October 19: The Zanzibar hardfork (v2.5.0) activates at block 53,533,081, around 02:00 UTC, moving staking rewards fully on-chain, tightening EVM gas precision, and enforcing BLS proof-of-possession on validator operations.

October 20: Elysium, Kinetiq’s Layer-2 for Hyperliquid, launches on mainnet after a four-week public test run that began September 22.

Expert Opinion: Market analysts view and answer why crypto market is down today as a mix of two forces layering on top of each other: macro pressure from rising bond yields after hot CPI data, and crypto-specific stress from sustained ETF outflows plus the Ledger security report. Liquidation-driven selloffs of this size, around $310 million, often overshoot before stabilizing, and the October 28 Fed meeting is being treated as the next real test of risk appetite.

With new mainnet launches landing the same week as continued ETF outflows, bullish and bearish forces are sitting side by side, so neither direction should be assumed without watching how both play out.
