Gold

A 2013 Ripple brochure described XRP as an asset without a counterparty and compared holding it to having gold in one’s hand.
Crypto researcher SMQKE shared the historical document, pointing to language that presents XRP as more than a digital asset used for transactions. The excerpt also outlines XRP’s intended role in moving value between currency gateways on the network.
The document provides historical context for how Ripple presented XRP and its potential utility during the early development of the XRP Ledger. However, SMQKE also draws a stronger conclusion from the comparison, suggesting that XRP’s current market price does not reflect its potential value and that its utility could eventually support a higher valuation.

What the 2013 Ripple Brochure Says About XRP

The attached image shows a section of a 2013 Ripple brochure titled “XRP as a Vehicle Currency.” The highlighted passage states: “XRP in Ripple is like gold in your hand.” It describes XRP as an asset without a counterparty that serves as a bridge currency between gateways.
The brochure also compares XRP’s role to that of the US dollar in foreign exchange markets, where a common currency can facilitate transactions between parties using different currencies. Its accompanying diagram illustrates how XRP could transfer value between a US dollar gateway and a euro gateway.
This explanation presents XRP as an asset that could help connect otherwise separate currency systems. Rather than requiring a direct exchange between two currencies, a payment could use XRP as an intermediary.
The other highlighted passage reinforces this intended function by describing XRP as an asset designed to provide liquidity on the XRP Ledger. Together, the excerpts show how the brochure explained XRP’s proposed role in the network.

Why SMQKE Focuses on the Gold Comparison

SMQKE argues that the comparison deserves consideration because the wording appeared in an official Ripple publication. The researcher interprets the description as evidence that Ripple recognized XRP’s distinct characteristics from the network’s early development.
SMQKE’s tweet draws a comparison between XRP and gold, noting that neither asset represents another party’s debt. However, the two serve different purposes. Gold has long served as a physical commodity and store of value, while XRP operates on the XRP Ledger and can facilitate transfers between different currencies. This gives XRP a practical role in digital payments and liquidity management that gold cannot offer in the same way.
SMQKE also claims that Ripple did not repeat the comparison in later materials. However, the attached excerpt alone does not establish whether Ripple used similar language elsewhere.

Does the Comparison Mean XRP Is Undervalued?

SMQKE believes the market may be underestimating XRP’s potential, particularly if its use in payments and cross-currency transfers continues to grow. Greater adoption could increase demand for the asset and influence its long-term price.
However, the 2013 brochure does not prove that XRP is undervalued or establish how high its price could rise. Its future performance will depend on actual network usage, demand for liquidity, competition, regulatory developments, and overall market conditions.
