ENS founder Nick Johnson posted an executable governance draft titled "Activate ENSv2" on October 11, 2026, proposing to bring ENSv2 online on Ethereum mainnet, with one critical asymmetry: while the DAO could reverse a v1 freeze, any individual .eth name migration to ENSv2 would be permanent and cannot be undone.

The proposal draws a clear line between two types of reversibility. The ENSv1 freeze, which would halt new .eth registrations, remains reversible at the DAO level up to a certain stage. But once a holder moves a name to ENSv2, the draft states the v1 token is transferred to a contract called the Graveyard, which has no mechanism to return it. The migration is a one-way door.
Holders who do nothing face no immediate penalty. Unmigrated .eth names continue resolving and renewing under v1 rules, and the proposal sets no deadline for migration. The draft authorizes ETHRenewerV1 specifically so unmigrated names remain renewable indefinitely after the v1 freeze takes effect.
Grace Period and Expiry Changes Holders Should Know

ENSv2 shortens the grace period from 90 days to 28 days, a structural difference that would affect how long a lapsed name remains claimable after expiry. ENSv2 uses a 28-day grace period, versus 90 days for ENSv1, according to the activation draft.

To compensate for the shorter window, the draft says each migrated name's ENSv2 expiry will be extended by 62 days, preserving the same effective lapse date the holder had under v1. The proposed migration adds 62 days to the ENSv2 expiry so the name keeps the same lapse day.

What Irreversibility Means for Holders and the Ecosystem

The one-way migration changes the calculus for .eth name holders who integrate their names across wallets, dApps, and identity infrastructure. A name migrated in error, or migrated before an application ecosystem is ready for ENSv2, cannot be recovered to v1. Holders should verify that tools and integrations they rely on fully support ENSv2 resolution before initiating any migration.

For the broader ecosystem, secondary reporting confirms the activation process also includes a temporary pause in new .eth registrations during the transition period. Applications dependent on programmatic ENS registration flows will need to account for that gap.

The proposal remains subject to ENS DAO approval; no contract changes execute until the governance process concludes. Holders considering migration should monitor the official ENS DAO forum for the final vote outcome and any amendments before taking action. This kind of protocol-level governance decision mirrors recent moves across Ethereum DeFi, where proposals with irreversible on-chain consequences have drawn heightened scrutiny from token holders before ratification.

ETH was trading at $2,508.39 at the time of writing, essentially flat on the day. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index stood at 57, indicating Greed, suggesting broader market sentiment is not pricing in significant protocol risk from the proposal.
