Broadcom CEO Hock Tan has warned that speculative investing in artificial intelligence increasingly resembles casino gambling, adding to concerns surrounding the global AI boom as semiconductor stocks suffer another sharp selloff.
Samsung Electronics shares fell approximately 7.4% on Tuesday, October 13, while rival SK Hynix plunged 10%. The losses followed a 2.7% decline in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index on Monday, extending a broader retreat in AI-related technology stocks.
However, the selloff reflects more than Tan's comments, with growing competition from Chinese memory manufacturers raising fresh questions about the industry's profitability.Broadcom CEO Warns AI Investors Are Taking Casino-Like Risks
Speaking during a technology panel in Singapore on October 12, Tan criticized investors who commit capital to artificial intelligence without fully understanding the companies or technologies involved.
According to Reuters, Tan compared parts of the investment frenzy to casino gambling, warning that unrealistic expectations can leave investors exposed when AI companies fail to deliver anticipated returns.
The Broadcom executive also identified financing as a growing challenge for the industry. While semiconductor manufacturers are gradually overcoming wafer and memory shortages, securing sufficient investment capital could become a more significant constraint on AI expansion.
His remarks were not a rejection of artificial intelligence itself. Tan acknowledged that OpenAI and Anthropic have demonstrated substantial revenue-generating potential through their latest AI models.
Nevertheless, questions surrounding AI revenue and infrastructure spending have increasingly influenced semiconductor valuations, particularly as companies commit billions of dollars to computing capacity.Samsung Falls 7% as Chinese Chip Competition Intensifies
The latest decline was particularly severe in South Korea, where semiconductor manufacturers dominate the country's stock market.
Samsung dropped 7.4%, while SK Hynix lost approximately 10%, contributing to a 5.5% decline in South Korea's KOSPI index. Japanese and European semiconductor stocks also weakened as concerns spread across global technology markets.
A separate catalyst was progress announced by China's ChangXin Memory Technologies, which is developing denser DRAM architecture potentially capable of improving memory manufacturing efficiency.
The development threatens to increase competition for established memory producers, including Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, although large-scale commercial production remains unproven.
These concerns build on the recent Micron selloff, when investors began reassessing whether Chinese manufacturers could eventually challenge the pricing power of leading AI memory suppliers.
