Blockchain.com has submitted an application to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission seeking approval to offer prediction markets and crypto derivatives trading, a move that would bring two distinct product categories under direct federal commodities oversight.

What to Know

Blockchain.com is seeking regulatory approval from the CFTC, the federal agency that oversees U.S. commodities and derivatives markets, to operate prediction markets and crypto derivatives products.

No approval has been granted. This is an application filing, and the outcome and timeline of the CFTC review process remain uncertain.

The application covers two separate but related product areas. Prediction markets allow participants to take positions on the outcome of real-world events, with contracts settling based on verified results. Crypto derivatives, by contrast, are financial instruments whose value is derived from an underlying digital asset, such as a futures contract tied to Bitcoin's price. For related coverage, see US Seeks AudiA6 Duo Extradition in $389M Crypto Case.

Both categories fall within CFTC jurisdiction. The CFTC has published guidance on prediction markets, noting that contracts offering event-based payouts can constitute commodity futures under the Commodity Exchange Act depending on their structure. Gaining CFTC approval would require Blockchain.com to operate within that regulatory framework, including registration and compliance requirements. For related coverage, see CLARITY Act Targets Crypto Regulation Overhaul in US.

Blockchain.com is one of the oldest infrastructure companies in the Bitcoin ecosystem, best known for its wallet and block explorer products. Expanding into CFTC-regulated derivatives would represent a significant shift toward financial product offerings that compete in the same regulated space as established futures venues. This is a parallel path to what Kalshi has pursued with prediction markets on Solana, bringing event-linked contracts onto regulated rails.

Why the Move Matters for Crypto Market Access

A successful CFTC approval would place Blockchain.com's prediction market and derivatives offerings inside a U.S. regulatory perimeter, potentially making those products accessible to institutional and retail participants who require or prefer regulated venues. The CFTC framework carries margin requirements, reporting obligations, and customer protection standards that unregulated offshore derivatives platforms do not.

The application also reflects a broader pattern of crypto firms seeking to operate under existing U.S. financial law rather than waiting for bespoke crypto legislation. The CLARITY Act has targeted a broader crypto regulation overhaul, but CFTC approval via existing authority moves faster than new legislation. Similarly, Nasdaq's SEC application for stock tokenization shows that legacy and crypto-native firms alike are now pursuing regulated pathways for novel financial products.

For Bitcoin specifically, regulated derivatives infrastructure carries direct relevance to price discovery and institutional access. Bitcoin futures markets listed on CFTC-regulated exchanges like the CME have historically influenced spot market dynamics, and any expansion of regulated crypto derivatives supply adds to the depth of that market structure. The SEC's Project Crypto effort to reshape market oversight signals that multiple federal regulators are actively staking out jurisdiction over digital asset products.

The key uncertainty is the CFTC's timeline and decision. Regulatory review processes can extend for months, and approval is not guaranteed. Until the CFTC acts, Blockchain.com's proposed products remain pending, and no launch date has been confirmed.
