According to Anza, the developer behind Solana’s Agave validator software, the reduction from 250 milliseconds is scheduled for epoch 1053, expected around 15:00 UTC.
The upgrade would allow Solana to target five block production opportunities per second, twice the frequency supported by its original 400 millisecond configuration.
The change follows three reductions completed since August under SIMD-0525, a proposal designed to improve network response times while keeping overall computing capacity relatively stable.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="solana-prepares-final-slot-time-reduction-under-simd-0525">Solana prepares final slot time reduction under SIMD-0525</h2>
Solana began reducing its target slot times on Aug. 21, when the network moved from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. A second reduction to 300 milliseconds followed on Aug. 28, before the target reached 250 milliseconds on Sept. 18.
The latest stage would complete the planned sequence and reduce the time available for each validator to produce a block.
A slot represents a short period during which an assigned validator can process transactions and propose a block. With shorter slots, wallets, exchanges and decentralized applications can receive new transaction information more frequently.
The <a href="https://solana.com/uk/upgrades/reduced-slot-times" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Solana Foundation’s upgrade documentation</a> describes the reduction as an effort to improve latency and limit how long individual validators control block production.
Under the existing arrangement, validators produce blocks across four consecutive slots. At 400 milliseconds per slot, each validator previously had a 1.6 second window to order transactions.
Once the 200 millisecond target takes effect, the same four slot window will last just 800 milliseconds.

A shorter production window could limit the time validators have to delay transactions or take advantage of price differences between Solana and other trading venues.
The network will maintain controls on the amount of computing work allowed in each block.
At 250 milliseconds, a block can carry up to 37.5 million compute units. Under the final configuration, the limit falls to 30 million compute units.
Although blocks are expected to arrive more frequently, each will contain proportionally less computing work. The adjustment is intended to keep theoretical processing capacity roughly unchanged.
As <a href="https://crypto.news/solana-agave-42-rent-cut-larger-transactions-200ms-slots/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto.news previously reported</a>, the staged rollout includes safeguards that can stop further slot reductions if skipped block rates exceed the permitted threshold.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="faster-solana-blocks-bring-new-demands-for-validators">Faster Solana blocks bring new demands for validators</h2>
The shorter slot duration will require validators to operate on a tighter schedule, particularly those submitting votes during every available slot.
Under the original 400 millisecond configuration, the network targeted 2.5 slots per second. At 200 milliseconds, the target rises to five.
Validators voting on every slot would consequently need to submit votes twice as frequently, potentially raising operating expenses and placing more pressure on network connections.
Transaction processing presents another consideration for wallets and applications.
Solana transactions include a recent blockhash, which helps prevent previously processed transactions from being replayed.
Blockhashes remain valid for a limited number of recent blocks. As the network produces slots more frequently, the amount of real time available to submit a transaction using a particular blockhash becomes shorter.
Transactions requiring manual authorization, multiple signatures or offline approval could face tighter deadlines.
Actual network performance will depend on how validators respond to the faster schedule.
Solana Compass data from recent epochs showed average slot durations of approximately 266 to 269 milliseconds under the previous 250 millisecond target.
The difference between the configured target and observed performance indicates that the network has not consistently achieved its intended slot duration.
Developers have already deployed the 200 millisecond configuration on testnet and devnet, but mainnet performance will depend partly on how frequently validators miss their assigned production slots.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="solana-s-alpenglow-upgrade-remains-a-separate-development">Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade remains a separate development</h2>
Solana’s latest slot reduction is taking place while developers prepare another network change focused on transaction finality.
The <a href="https://crypto.news/solana-alpenglow-upgrade-reaches-devnet-150ms-finality/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Alpenglow consensus upgrade</a> has reached Solana’s devnet and testnet, where developers are evaluating a system intended to reduce finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds.
Unlike SIMD-0525, which changes the frequency of block production, Alpenglow changes how validators reach agreement that a block is final.
The proposed consensus system replaces TowerBFT with Votor, a voting mechanism designed to finalize blocks through one or two rounds of direct validator communication.
Solana’s existing mainnet continues to use TowerBFT, and the Foundation has not confirmed a fixed activation date for Alpenglow.
In September, <a href="https://crypto.news/solana-alpenglow-testnet-what-does-the-150ms-finality-upgrade-change/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">developers prepared Agave 4.3</a> for the consensus tests, while the slot reduction proceeded under a separate activation schedule.
The two upgrades address different parts of transaction processing. A faster slot target does not automatically mean transactions achieve finality in 200 milliseconds.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="sol-price-indicators-remain-mixed-ahead-of-the-upgrade">SOL price indicators remain mixed ahead of the upgrade</h2>
Solana’s native token was trading near $110.30 on Friday, down approximately 1.96% over the previous 24 hours and 7.16% over seven days.
Despite the planned network upgrade, <a href="https://www.coinlore.com/coin/solana/forecast/price-prediction" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">technical indicators</a> showed mixed momentum for Solana, with eight bullish signals, eight bearish signals and six neutral readings.
The 14 day relative strength index stood near 44, below the neutral midpoint of 50 but above the commonly watched oversold threshold of 30.
Moving averages presented a divided picture. SOL was trading below its 20 day exponential moving average near $115.14, while remaining above its 50 day EMA at approximately $107.31 and 200 day EMA near $97.07.
The readings indicated weaker short term momentum despite the token remaining above its longer term moving averages.
Immediate resistance stood around $113.99, followed by another level near $119.82. On the downside, the indicators identified support around $97.94.
A sustained move above the first resistance level would put the next level in focus, while a drop below support could leave SOL exposed to further selling.
Institutional demand has been another factor in SOL’s recent market performance.
An <a href="https://crypto.news/can-alpenglow-push-solana-price-past-125-in-october/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">October price analysis</a> noted that U.S. Solana exchange traded funds attracted approximately $800,000 during the preceding week, compared with $188.1 million in the week before.
The slower inflows followed a period of stronger institutional buying, with the <a href="https://crypto.news/bitwise-solana-etf-becomes-first-to-cross-1-billion/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitwise Solana Staking ETF</a> having surpassed $1 billion in assets in August.
Meanwhile, Solana’s 200 millisecond configuration has completed deployment on its testing networks. Developers have made the mainnet rollout conditional on network conditions, including validator block skip rates, with activation scheduled at the epoch 1053 boundary.
