Kaia’s KAIA token rose as much as 84% on Friday, October 9, after Upbit, South Korea’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, opened trading in the asset against the Korean won, Bitcoin and USDT at 18:30 KST. By 11:30 UTC the token was changing hands near $0.0615, according to CoinMarketCap, which put the 24-hour gain at 58.5% and the market capitalisation at $396.1M. On Binance, the daily candle stood about 65% above its open at that point. The listing gives Korean retail traders access to KAIA on the country’s deepest won order book, and it landed while the token was already nearly two months into a recovery from its August low.

The exchange that kept Kaia’s predecessor off its won board

Kaia came out of the 2024 merger of Klaytn and Finschia, the blockchains originally built by Korean internet group Kakao and messaging company LINE. Klaytn’s KLAY token traded for years on Bithumb, Coinone and Korbit, yet it never received a won market on Upbit’s domestic platform. Korean market participants long tied that absence to Kakao’s shareholding in Dunamu, the company that operates Upbit, and to the conflict of interest a listing would have raised. Upbit has not publicly confirmed that reading.

Friday’s notice ends the gap. Kaia’s post on X described Upbit as “the home market” and pointed out that deposits to the exchange run over the Kaia network itself.

How a won listing in Seoul lifts the price on Binance

Korean exchanges require a real-name bank account at a domestic lender, which leaves the won order books largely closed to foreign capital. When local demand for a newly listed token outruns the supply sitting on the exchange, the won price rises above the global one, a gap traders call the kimchi premium. Arbitrage desks respond by buying the token on offshore venues and depositing it to Upbit to sell into the higher price. That buying shows up on Binance.

Binance volume matches that flow: by 11:22 UTC, less than two hours after Upbit’s start time, 359.6M KAIA had traded on Binance’s USDT pair against a 20-day average of 43M. No other session on the daily chart comes close, including the May spike that briefly carried the token to $0.058.

One daily candle took out every high since March

KAIA spent March through August making lower highs under a falling 200-day exponential moving average, and a June breakdown carried it from about $0.050 to $0.0216 in mid-August. The recovery since then produced a higher low near $0.0265 in September and a first test of the 200-day average at $0.0413 in early October, which turned the price back for two sessions. Friday’s candle opened at $0.0370 and went straight through it.

From the August low the token has gained roughly 185%. Most of that distance was covered in a single session, and the indicators reflect it: an RSI of 85.5 means buying has been compressed into a very short window, while the price now sits about 49% above the 200-day average and 80% above the 50-day one. Gaps of that size tend to close, either through a pullback or through a period of sideways trading that lets the averages catch up. The 50-day average, at $0.0341, also remains below the 200-day, so the longer trend measures have yet to confirm what the price is doing.

The weekly chart shows a ceiling

KAIA fell 78% between its January high of $0.0969 and the August low, and the 0.618 Fibonacci retracement of that decline sits at $0.0681. Friday’s high was $0.0680. Тhe token recovered about 62% of this year’s fall and met sellers at the point where rebounds inside a downtrend frequently run out, leaving an upper wick of roughly 10% on the candle.

Below that ceiling, the price moved above the 50-week average at $0.0575 for the first time since the October 2025 crash and broke the May high, the first lower high of the downtrend to give way. Weekly volume has reached about 472M with more than two days left to trade, close to three times the 20-week average, and the weekly RSI near 65 leaves room that the daily reading does not.

Two precedents on these charts argue for caution. January’s spike to $0.0969 was reversed in full the following week. May’s high-volume jump was given back within weeks and preceded the June breakdown.

What the won market changes for KAIA after Friday

Price discovery for the token now has a second centre. On assets with an active Upbit won pair, Korean hours often set the direction for the rest of the day, and the size of the premium over the Binance price becomes a live gauge of local demand. A premium that shrinks while offshore volume fades would indicate the arbitrage flow behind Friday’s move has run its course.

If buyers hold the breakout

The week closes above the $0.0575 to $0.0593 band, the first weekly close over the 50-week average in a year. Price then consolidates under $0.068 while the daily RSI cools. A weekly close above $0.068 would bring $0.0808 and $0.0969 into range.

If the listing gain fades

The week closes back under $0.0575 with a long upper wick, a repeat of the January pattern. That would put $0.0504 in play first. A daily close below the $0.0394 to $0.0413 zone would mean the breakout failed.

The weekly candle closes at midnight UTC on Sunday, which gives the Upbit market two full weekend sessions to show whether won demand persists once the first-day order flow has cleared. The network added native USDT in 2025, and the Kaia Foundation’s chairman said that year it would work to bring a won-denominated stablecoin to the chain, a product whose natural users are the same retail traders who gained access to the token on Friday.
