CEO Lisa Su said AMD is planning supply with partners three to five years ahead and encouraging memory producers to expand capacity as quickly as possible. During meetings in South Korea, she identified Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix as crucial suppliers while describing the memory environment as “very tight,” according to a report from Seoul Economic Daily.
The push builds on more than $10 billion AMD already committed to Taiwan earlier this year and comes as the company prepares to substantially increase AI-chip supply in 2027.HBM4 Is Becoming a Bottleneck for AMD’s AI Expansion
AMD's next-generation Instinct MI455X accelerators and Helios rack-scale systems depend on HBM4, the latest generation of high-bandwidth memory designed to feed enormous amounts of data into AI processors.
Samsung signed an agreement in March to supply HBM4 for the MI455X, while AMD is also deepening cooperation with SK Hynix.
Su said the company is already shipping next-generation systems and wants both suppliers to increase production as AI data-center demand rises.
That matters because AMD's AI chip expansion is no longer limited by demand for its GPUs. The company increasingly needs enough memory, advanced wafers, packaging and server components to turn orders into deployed systems.AMD Wants Much More Supply in 2027
Su said AMD has increased capacity this year but demand continues to exceed available supply.
The company therefore plans a substantial increase in 2027 production and is discussing additional wafer capacity with TSMC while exploring alternative advanced-packaging technologies.
AMD's earlier $10 billion Taiwan investment targets packaging and semiconductor infrastructure, but Su indicated spending across the wider supply chain could ultimately reach tens of billions.
The expansion follows extraordinary growth in AMD's Data Center business. Second-quarter revenue more than doubled year over year, helping push the company's market value above $1 trillion.
Investors have consequently begun treating AMD as a broader AI infrastructure platform rather than simply Nvidia's GPU challenger.Samsung Could Become More Than a Memory Supplier
AMD is also considering deeper cooperation with Samsung beyond HBM.
Su confirmed the company continues to explore Samsung's foundry services, potentially giving AMD another manufacturing relationship alongside TSMC.
That diversification could become increasingly valuable if AI demand keeps stretching semiconductor capacity.
AMD's opportunity is enormous: its latest server CPU outlook points to growth across both GPUs and CPUs.
