When <a href="https://x.com/TCHtweets" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">@TCHtweets</a> announced on September 24 that it had chosen <a href="https://x.com/quantnetwork" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">@quantnetwork</a> to power its new tokenized deposit network, most coverage focused on what it meant for <a href="https://x.com/search?q=%24QNT&amp;src=cashtag_click" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">$QNT</a>. The more instructive question is who The Clearing House actually is, and why its endorsement carries so much weight.
<h2 id="the-infrastructure-behind-us-banking">The Infrastructure Behind US Banking</h2>
The Clearing House was <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/SECRS/2019/February/20190207/OP-1625/OP-1625_121418_133156_423844567989_1.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">founded in 1853</a> by 38 New York banks and served as a de facto central bank before the Federal Reserve existed. Today it is owned by the largest US commercial banks and sits at the center of the country's payment system.
It operates three core payment systems: CHIPS for large-value wire clearing, the EPN automated clearing house (ACH), and the RTP network, the private-sector real-time payments rail it launched in 2017. Its networks clear and settle more than $2 trillion per day across wire transfers, ACH, checks, and real-time payments. In 2024, EPN alone handled 20.7 billion payments worth $56.4 trillion, roughly half of all US commercial ACH volume. CHIPS is the largest private-sector USD clearing and settlement network in the world for high-value wire payments.
<h2 id="why-quant-was-chosen">Why Quant Was Chosen</h2>
The Clearing House selected Quant, described as a leading provider of programmable money infrastructure, to power its On-Chain Money Initiative, a new interoperable payments network that will enable financial institutions to clear and settle tokenized deposit transactions.
Tokenized deposits are digital representations of bank balances. A tokenized deposit remains a deposit liability of the bank that issued it, which distinguishes them from public stablecoins and preserves the existing protections depositors rely on.
Quant will handle the interoperability and transaction layer, linking the network to systems like RTP and CHIPS. The selection reflects Quant's positioning as a provider of programmable money infrastructure that supports interoperability across multiple ledgers rather than requiring institutions to commit to a single blockchain.
The initiative is backed by 25 of the country's largest financial institutions, naming Bank of America, Citi, J.P. Morgan, Wells Fargo, HSBC, BNY, PNC Bank, U.S. Bank, and Truist among others. The On-Chain Money Initiative is designed to create new opportunities across corporate treasury, liquidity management, cross-border payments, and digital asset settlement. The network is expected to become available to participating institutions in the first half of 2027.
