Armani Ferrante, the chief executive of Backpack, has unveiled an ambitious strategy to dramatically increase tokenized stock availability on the Solana blockchain. While the platform presently supports approximately 200 stock symbols, Ferrante envisions scaling this offering to an impressive 10,000 securities.

The ambitious roadmap was revealed in a video segment posted by Solana’s official account on September 26. During the presentation, Ferrante articulated his vision to democratize access to equity markets via distributed ledger technology.

“We’re not talking about 10 stocks or even 100 stocks. Our mission is to bring the entire stock market onto Solana,” Ferrante explained.

He outlined an infrastructure where traditional securities could seamlessly transition from conventional brokerage custody into decentralized finance ecosystems and return through a single application programming interface. Ferrante characterized the expansion from 200 to 10,000 symbols as “the next leap” in the platform’s evolution.

The company has not committed to a specific rollout schedule. Additionally, no information has been provided regarding which securities will receive priority in the expansion phase.

Understanding Backpack’s Infrastructure

The securities platform from Backpack made its debut in June of this year. Through its brokerage service, customers can maintain positions in United States equities and exchange-traded funds. Eligible assets can subsequently be converted into their blockchain-based equivalents.

When users deposit compatible tokens back through the Backpack Exchange interface, they are reconverted into traditional securities. According to the company, brokerage-held assets comply with New York’s Uniform Commercial Code Article 8 standards. The platform also facilitates dividend distributions, corporate actions, and asset transfers using established mechanisms such as the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS).

These digital representations can be stored in Solana-compatible wallets. Holders have the ability to transfer tokens to other individuals. According to Backpack, the tokens may also participate in decentralized finance protocols, subject to each application’s specific terms and conditions.

The platform’s inaugural tokenized offering represented shares of SpaceX, introduced in June through a collaboration with a partner named Sunrise. Subsequently, the company rolled out tokens representing equity in additional corporations, such as Micron and SanDisk. A CoreWeave-linked token was added to the roster in September.

Understanding Token Holder Entitlements

Important distinctions exist between holding securities in a traditional brokerage account versus possessing their tokenized counterparts, despite Backpack’s assertion of one-to-one convertibility. In the case of its Micron offering, the company states that conventional brokerage account holders receive cash dividend payments through standard distribution channels.

Token holders, conversely, have their dividend entitlements automatically reinvested as additional tokens. Corporate actions are implemented through token balance modifications rather than traditional methods.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has cautioned investors that tokenized securities vary significantly in their structure and associated rights. In guidance issued this January, the regulatory body emphasized that entitlements tied to tokens depend entirely on their technical implementation. While some tokens represent beneficial ownership of actual shares maintained in qualified custody, others establish fundamentally different types of economic claims.

On September 17, the SEC established a five-year regulatory framework permitting qualified platforms to facilitate tokenized stock trading under stringent conditions. Approved venues must verify that token holders receive equivalent rights to traditional shareholders. Trading activity must be suspended whenever the underlying security experiences a trading halt.

The SEC has not publicly identified Backpack among the platforms authorized to operate under this newly created exemption. In related developments, Backpack recently appointed Kyle Samani, previously an executive at Multicoin Capital, to its United States board of directors. No timeframe has been announced for the expansion of domestic stock-related services.
