Solana co-founder <a href="https://36crypto.com/anatoly-yakovenko-early-life-and-net-worth-the-vision-behind-solana-and-the-quest-for-scalable-crypto-infrastructure/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Anatoly Yakovenko</a> has highlighted the activation of Alpenglow on devnet, marking another test of the network’s planned consensus upgrade. “You’re not ready for this,” he wrote in response to the rollout. 
<a href="https://x.com/toly/status/2103582089673331008" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">According to Anza</a>, its engineers activated Alpenglow on devnet following a successful switch on testnet. The upgrade replaces TowerBFT with Votor, changing how validators agree on blocks and confirm that transactions are final. 
That change could substantially reduce the wait for finality. Solana currently takes about 12.8 seconds to finalize a transaction, while Alpenglow targets approximately 150 milliseconds. However, those faster results remain a goal for the new protocol, rather than a speed already available on mainnet. 
Anza activated the devnet feature at epoch 1167, followed by a countdown before the new consensus process took over. The separate testnet activation gives developers two public environments for examining its behavior under different conditions.

<h2 id="how-alpenglow-changes-solana-s-validator-voting">How Alpenglow Changes Solana’s Validator Voting</h2>
Under TowerBFT, validators place votes on-chain as they work toward agreement on a block. Votor moves that coordination off-chain and combines validator responses into compact cryptographic certificates. 
Consequently, the change reduces the block space used by voting and could leave more capacity for user transactions. It may also lower the costs associated with processing votes for node operators. 
Alpenglow does not change <a href="https://36crypto.com/solanas-rwa-value-hits-4-6-billion-as-holder-count-nearly-doubles/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Solana’s</a> virtual machine or the structure of its smart contracts. Therefore, developers can test how their existing applications respond to faster finality without rewriting their core programs. 
The protocol provides different routes to finality based on validator participation. Its faster route targets around 100 milliseconds when validators representing enough stake respond promptly. A fallback route targets roughly 150 milliseconds when agreement needs another step. 
Additionally, Alpenglow uses a model designed to handle two types of disruption at once. It aims to keep operating when up to 20% of stake acts maliciously and another 20% goes offline. 
For applications such as payments and games, faster finality could reduce the wait before users receive a settled result. Developers still need to check application performance and network stability during the public testing phase. 
Yakovenko’s comment drew attention to the scale of Solana’s proposed change, while the devnet rollout provided a test. Anza has not announced when Alpenglow will reach mainnet, where its speed targets would affect ordinary transactions.
