Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has made an unexpected admission about Solana while discussing why investors might choose XRP over competing cryptocurrencies.
Crypto enthusiast Diana shared a tweet featuring Garlinghouse’s comments, including his disclosure that he owns some SOL and does not view Solana as a competitor to Ripple. His remarks also challenge the idea that Ripple’s CEO should promote XRP at the expense of other major cryptocurrencies.

During the discussion, an audience member asked Garlinghouse why someone should choose XRP instead of Solana and how he would compare the two cryptocurrencies.
Garlinghouse rejected the idea that he should persuade investors to buy XRP. He instead described the approach he recommends to people close to him.
“What I honestly tell my close friends is I’m not here to convince you to buy XRP,” Garlinghouse said. “What I would tell you is buy the top five and hold them for the next five years, and you’re going to do great.”
Garlinghouse then disclosed that he owns some Solana. He also rejected the label of an XRP maximalist and explained that he remains bullish on several cryptocurrencies for different reasons.
“So I own a little bit of Solana,” he said. “I’m not one of these people who’s an XRP maximalist. I’m bullish on a bunch of cryptos for a bunch of reasons.”
His comments present diversification as his preferred approach rather than concentrating on XRP alone.

<h2 id="strong-garlinghouse-says-xrp-and-solana-can-both-perform-well-strong">Garlinghouse Says XRP And Solana Can Both Perform Well</h2>
Garlinghouse also explained why he believes Solana has attracted significant liquidity. He pointed to <a href="https://timestabloid.com/if-you-still-think-solana-sol-is-just-for-memecoins-read-this/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">meme coin activity on the Solana layer-1 network</a> as one factor that drove capital into the ecosystem.
“Solana obviously leaned into the meme coin activity, and it drove a lot of liquidity,” he said. Garlinghouse later explained that meme coins built on Solana contributed to the network’s liquidity.
He then encouraged investors to consider both cryptocurrencies rather than choosing one over the other.
“I’m not going to try to convince you of that because I’m like, look, buy both,” Garlinghouse said. He added that he expects Solana to perform well and also expects XRP to perform well.
Garlinghouse acknowledged that their future performance could differ depending on how developments unfold for Ripple and the <a href="https://timestabloid.com/cardano-creators-secret-dinner-with-solana-foundation-president-lily-liu/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Solana Foundation</a>. However, he does not consider Solana a direct competitor to Ripple.
“I don’t consider Solana a competitor,” he said. “I mean, I’m friendly with them. There are others I would say we compete with maybe a little more than that.”
Garlinghouse ultimately expressed support for the <a href="https://timestabloid.com/solana-is-now-live-on-the-xrp-ledger-heres-the-significance/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Solana ecosystem</a>, saying, “I root for Solana for sure.”

Diana’s post also included contrasting reactions from commenters. Spawn rider defended Garlinghouse’s position, <a href="https://x.com/spawnrider51281/status/2103421807013568602?s=46" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">saying</a> the Ripple CEO doesn’t need to become an XRP maximalist. He maintained that different cryptocurrencies can serve different purposes.
RYNO took a different position. He <a href="https://x.com/ryno8180/status/2103429655990874518?s=46" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> he prefers CEOs who clearly maintain maximalist positions around their preferred assets. He specifically referenced Michael Saylor’s support for Bitcoin and questioned whether executives should personally own assets that compete with their companies.
Garlinghouse’s comments instead show that he personally owns some SOL, supports multiple cryptocurrencies, and does not view Solana as a direct competitor to <a href="https://timestabloid.com/ripple-was-first-founded-in-canada-heres-what-it-means-for-xrp-holders/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ripple</a>. His recommendation to hold several leading assets over five years also reflects the diversified approach he described during the discussion.
